New Boy On The Block

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Mick_J, May 23, 2017.

  1. I have been riding bike for a while now and have 4 at the moment but I am selling my Triumph Tiger Sport to buy something else, I am considering a Monster 1200. Looking for any information can get about them, stuff like:
Are they reliable (my last Duke was an 80's GTS, when it rained, I pushed).
How easy are they to service (I want to do all my own maintenance).
Would you buy another or look elsewhere.
    What is great.
    What niggles.

I am looking at the KTM superduke, Triumph Speed Triple R and BMW R1200r as well so this may be my only post or the start of a new friendship. Sorry for asking so many questions on my first post.

    Mick

  2. Welcome Dave. Ducati's are now as reliable as any other main stream manufacturer. I love mine :)

  3. Welcome, I'll second El T's comments above ;)

  4. Welcome - for video's on belt changing see my web site :)

  5. Thanks guys, I took one out yesterday for a spin, was really impressed. Just enough vibration to remind you the engine is running but smooth at the same time, brakes, suspension and seating are good but I would get the touring seat as it's thicker. Definitely on my shortlist but have to try the KTM and the Monster S first to see if the extra cost is worth it. Still trying to gather information about the bikes though.

  6. Welcome. I loved my monster s4rs, so well made and finished. I used to go in the garage just to look at it!
Got a multi now, fantastic performance and long distance comfort, just not as pretty!
    :)

  7. Red is the best colour faster and reliable :)

    Welcome into the mad house

  8. Welcome mate, I tried a SDR KTM today, see my separate thread, very very good bike, but so is the monster . Decisions ??

  9. Welcome Mick. I'm riding my first Ducati & first Monster and I love it. I opted for the 821 Stripe, I'd been off bikes for 10 years and always wanted a Monster. I saw this and had to have it. I bought it without test riding, something I've never done before, but it was the right decision without a doubt. If you haven't had a Ducati, you don't know what your missing. They ooze character & style and sure they all have their own little niggles, but that's part of what makes them special. Go for it, you'll love it, the rest are just bikes, the Monster is a Ducati. :)

  10. Wayne58.
I tried the SDR two days ago, thought it was a great bike but not for me, wife did not like it, said it felt like a trail bike with sports tyres.

  12. My shortlist is down to two bike, just need to ride them back to back. Still trawling through all the good info here.

  13. What two??

  14. Ducati Monster 1200s and the BMW R1200r sport.

  15. Hmmm
Will you buy with your head or your heart I wonder...

  16. Head also asks how often do I need to change the cam belts? Is it on mileage (18k) or age (2 years) as it might take 8 years to clock up 18k as I have 4 bikes.

  17. Finally got to run out on the BMW yesterday and I think that will be my next bike. I really like the monster but any new bike has to cater for two and the beamer is a bit more comfortable for my 6' 3" frame. Thanks for all the input and if I ever get a bike for solo use it will be a 1200 monster.
