Ducati V-single

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Old rider, May 23, 2017.

  1. Ok, just stuck the coil back in, having cleaned it up and wrapped some tape around the lead.

I still have a v-twin single but the error code is now 10.1... Any ideas??

  2. OR, that's the code I had, hopefully Cream Revenge's coil will arrive soon. Its a faff but did you swap the coils?

  3. It is a faff, so I've been kind of avoiding that...
Motojohn lives just down the road from me and has a 999. I was thinking of asking to borrow his front coil to substitute for mine, as that's such a simple way to check. I haven't actually given CR the green light to send his coil as he may need it himself. I was hoping someone may have one that is actually surplus to requirements but that doesn't seem to be the case.

  4. I have 3 spares. I'm a horder. There I'd also another on eBay at the moment.

  5. 2 spares. Not 3.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  6. What one are you looking at on ebay??

  7. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

  8. Thanks CR. Just ordered it :)

At that price it's worth having for a spare even if the wiring turns out to be the problem :)

  9. Good luck.

  10. Thank you.

Fingers crossed it solves the problem.

  11. Is the lead that comes with the later coils just an extension lead that plugs into the connector that currently goes straight onto the coil??

  12. I believe so, it's longer so not open to the crud that comes off the front wheel. Apparently it connectes the same, you just need to cable tie the excess cable out the way somewhere.

  13. So it's permanently connected and sealed at the coil end. That makes sense, ta.

  14. I have cleaned up the wires and stripped off the wrapping. All wires look in good nick and on testing, there appears to be no continuity between the pins on the wiring side of the connector. So no indication of a short circuit there. However, If I switch on the ignition with the coil disconnected from the loom, I still get a 10.1 error - coil shorted to power supply.
I don't know what to make of that??

  15. Could it depend on the ecms diagnostic strategy? , see it a lot on car stuff if you un plug a sensor ......you can get open circuit or short to ground or short to positive ....the ecm has not got the capability to work out which it is so flags them all .

Some tests you could do whilst waiting for the coil .....On the plug to the coil pack is it 3 wires ? are two wires solid colours and the other has a tracer or are two wires heavy guage than the third wire .
So normally with 3 wire coils the 2 heavier gauge are coil live and earth and the remaining wire is coil trigger .

So with a bulb test light check that there is live and earth to the coil ......it may have to be running for this as coils may not be permanent supply with ignition on , if both live and earth present then check the trigger ......the trigger could be live or earth , so with test light croc clip on neg dip on trigger wire see if bulb pulses ....it may only be dim , if no trigger try putting test light croc clip on battery positive and dip on again .

So if coil live , earth and trigger are all present you have done the diagnostic pathway tests and the new coil should fix the issue

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  16. 3 wires - brown/white blue/white and black in the centre, all the same gauge.

The error code has now switched back to short to earth, which is where it started but then switched to short to power supply

  17. easy access to engine ecu? if so. disconnect it and check for a short at the plug going in to the coils (plug disconnected) with yer multimeater set on the highest ohms setting. it should read open circuit.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  18. Have checked the plug at the coil end and there's no continuity between any of the three pins at 200 ohm setting with ignition off

  19. try it at its highest setting. you never know.
