Just having my Dvt serviced at Riders in Cardiff, whilst I was waiting the service manager called me into the workshop to take a look at my chain tension, as the rear wheel is rotated, the chain differs quite dramatically in tension! As if the sprocket is egg shaped!? Not a happy bunny, as I'm going to have to refit the stock sprocket I bought it 2nd hand from a fellow forum member some time ago ( not looking to blame anyone by the way ) so I'm not able to return it to the supplier The techy said he'd seen this before with supersprox Anyone else experienced this ?
I'd check the sprocket is running ovoid first before before changing sprocket. Jerry rig a pointer and spin the back wheel to see if it is actually out. I not sure about the fitters in Cardiff.
Google it. There are lots of 'experts' who don't recommend it. I have normally gone -1 front as much as anything because it's cheaper!
Sounds like you have tight & loose section in your chain. The dealership should of stated the issue is the chain is fubar. I highly doubt that the sprocket is oval. If the teeth were hooked they also should of given you a advisory.
Would the chain be duff after just 3500 miles ? Always kept it clean & well lubricated too I've got a socket coming this week , (after sheering the crap Oberon one I bought some time ago !) to remove the rear nut holding the sprocket on, its bloody tight ! I'm going to refit the stock sprocket & go from there
Moving the chain links by hand, going up & down is the best method of inspection. As you turn the chain you'll notice a tight section when it either goes around the rear sprocket pulling the chain tight or with hand inspection method. 3.5k is very low to have ruined a chain but its either been fitted tight or it depends on your throttle wrist. As I say I doubt its the sprocket but suggest its the chain.
Is it the first chain, i.e.bike done 3500 miles? I replaced mine, as it was stretching quite a lot and looked terrible even though well maintained, at about 4k.
Bradders, yes it's the first chain, am I right in thinking you have the 42t rear sprocket too ? If so, did you change the chain for a longer one ?
I have a 42T sprocket and didn't need to change the chain. Plenty of leeway in the rear wheel adjustment to take the extra two teeth.
Not plenty of leeway,you are just about on the limit of chain adjustment with a stock chain & 42t sprocket & ride height is altered, ( haven't we been here before !!? ) I was using the stock chain, but quite possibly my stock chain is buggered, so I may as well up it to the 110 link chain Was just asking bradders for a link to the one he has Steve
