Panigale Pros And Cons.

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Skidmark66, May 28, 2017.

  1. Giving some thought to getting one for track use only. Must confess I havent riden one as of yet so will look to test one first if poss. Im looking for the pros and cons to owning one running costs and so on. What would be the best model to go for how good are the electronic gizmos. Any thoughts or help appreciated.
    Mark.

  2. I am still in the 'New relationship' phase of owning the 1299s, and I am still shocked at the performance every time I ride it.
I have been using a 996s for the track and it feels gutless and slow to turn in comparison,
its a little bit of a pain to work on if im honest as its a compact design, rather than modular like the 996 series.
I will be able to make a statement on track performance specifically in about 2 weeks as im off to Zandvort in Holland for a 2 day track day.
I have ridden the 1299 with and without the race seat and rearsets and it does change the initial feeling of the bike, but ill get used to it I think.

  3. Which model are you looking at? The 1299S is definitely a next generation on in terms of electronics and so on. It's a lot more accessible than the 1199S which really needs to be rode pretty hard to work well. If you are the sort of person to give it some beans in both acceleration and braking then I think the 1199 is a very good option, if you are a bit more of a relaxed rider than I'd advise trying to go for the 1299 generation.

The active suspension on the 1299S makes the bike even more accessible as you don't really need to worry too much about it at all unless you are really light or heavy in which case you might need springs changing. Being able to change the 1199S suspension to harder or softer at the touch of a button is very useful as well but it still needs a bit of manual work on stuff like the rear rebound rate to get it working well. People have said to me they would dump the electronic suspension if they were using an 1199S on track but personally I think it is worthwhile having it as once you are at home with the display it is easier than using tools. I've never heard of it going wrong but I suppose it does add in some weight and complication. I'd remove it from a race bike but never felt the need to remove it from my track bike.
That's all advise I'd normally suggest to people if they are considering the Pani for the road where the 1299S is definitely the king; if you're comfortable sorting out manual suspension then there's no need to go for the S, but I would consider putting some money aside for upgraded forks and shock because the base model suspension is noticeably lower quality than the Ohlins on the S models and the lightweight wheels make quite a difference as well, but then you are close to S money anyhow...!

If I was buying fresh just for track and the R engine was out of budget then I would likely try to find a base model that has had the suspension and wheels already changed. If I was buying for track and street then I'd want a 1299S.

  4. If it was purely as a track bike I'd probably not buy a panigale just because everything is expensive in terms of parts and you're going to cry if you bin it !

However if money is no object why not, they're a weapon!

I had my first outing on track on the 1299 on Monday having had the 899 before and the 12 is sublime. You get used to what makes it tick after a while.
I had the front end coming up at 145mph!!

  5. All good info this thanks. Regarding which model I have been in touch with a friend of mine and he builds bikes we have an 1199R motor to use along with some other goodies its just up to me as to what spec I want really.

  6. Save thousands buy a zx10r and you have tonnes of change for tyres etc

  7. Don't want a zx10

  9. I know this might upset a few and so apologies in advance, twere money available, I wouldn't buy on just on looks as it looks like a bitsa

From the front, it looks slim and meaningful but with a hair lip but from the tank down it looks like there is no engine in the front but suddenly a blob of an engine "happens" inline with the back of the tank. The rear shock looks like they have scooped up the tl1000 unused ones, the seat and tail unit looks like a diy job where someone has stuck a different bikes aftermarket race seat on it to finish it off.

I'm sure most who have one, love them but I like to see a flow on the design and like I said, it looks more like a bitsa, more apologies

  10. You're possibly the first person who I know who thinks the panigale isn't gorgeous. It's quite feminine, not beefy like a s1000rr or a GSXR, but I love it.

  11. I love my 899 but the truth is I first wanted an 1198S and since that did not go through I purchased the 899. I'm talking looks, when in reality the 899 is too much bike for me so the 1198 would had been WAY too much bike.

  12. Pros.. Its 2 wheeled porn.

Cons. (In std form) 1199 power delivery is imo shit. Over sprung and Twitchy handling.
I've have mine three years, changed the gearing, decatted 1299 system, Rapidbike Evo, Sprint filter, softer springs to suit me. I also run 195 lo as 195 high is to much of a switch. It now handles and power delivery is more linear.

  13. I can see the attraction certainly but for me it would not take too much looking at it side on, to imagine a photoshop cut and shut of three bikes put together, the slimline front, the chunky bulbous middle and the racing seat almost non existant.

On that basis I'm unlikely to ever buy one but totally understand why people do, those same people would probably not buy a ds 1000 :D

  14. ^^^^^^
I definitely don't think they're as stunning as some and remember saying when they
were released, "well at least they're RED I suppose".
That should be self explanatory for lovers of older models.

I must say that I've never ridden one and most likely never will unless a mate buys
one, however if by chance (yeh right) I win lotto I'll buy a S/L 2, just because I can.
