748 Rear Shock Removal

  1. No patience me...still awaiting the arrival of my Haynes manual!!

In the mean time, is it possible to remove the rear shock, keeping the ride height adjuster supporting the rear and?
Likewise, can you remove the ride height adjuster with the shock supporting the rear end?

  2. The safest way would be to support the bike engine so the weight of the bike is
    off the rear suspension.
As the shock and ride height share the lower pivot spindle/bolt.
Crack the two top bolts shock and ride height and the lower pivot spindle/bolt before you
support the bike as they are quite tight plus the lower spindle/bolt can be a real pain to get off/out some times.
Take the rear wheel off helps to.

  3. Get an Abba stand and it's a simple job. A life time investment.

It's not easy to take the weight off the rear of the bike by supporting the bike under the engine as the sump isn't flat. I tried and i wouldn't want to leave the bike balanced on it.

  4. Use 2 axle stands under the footpegs - only works if you've got non-folding pegs, although I did read somewhere someone suggesting that you remove the footpegs and fit them upside-down on the opposite side to do this?

You could also suspend the rear of the bike by the subframe from the garage rafters or some kind of framework? but you can't do it on a rear stand as the swingarm will fold right up once the shock's gone plus all the weight will be on the bolt whilst you're removing it.

As said above best to remove the wheel and hugger (if fitted) for access.

  5. I supported mine from garage rafter at the rear with a webbing belt cheap from Machine Mart and had front paddock stand to keep bike steady. Dead easy to whip out the shock and replace.

  6. Cheers for the input :upyeah:

I'm guessing that a strap and the use of my "employers" forkilift would do the job!!
