Poorly 900ss - Help Requested - Cracked Frame And Piston Damage

  1. I haven't done it so I'm guessing - either through the hole in the crankcase where the barrels would be (probably the horiz one) or through the strainer filter hole. There is an article somewhere on this forum about it - I think it was by 470four (R.I.P)

  2. You can take out the oil strainer and a small mirror will fit in there

  4. You can see the gallery plug without endoscopes or mirrors. (though a torch will help!)
    Just look down horiz cylinder port at the crank in the area of the LH main bearing, and turn the crank until you see the gallery plug edge on.
    If it is backing out, it will be pressed against the outer cage of the main bearing, and sometimes is loose and free to turn (inwards) with something like a feeler gauge against the screw slot.
    If it has not moved, its surface would normally be just below the surface of the crank web.

  8. I was using logic - have you found out how to check your tacho drive yet without taking the head apart?

    Or changed it without taking the head apart or the engine out? - I have.

  11. My appologies, yes ylu should be able to see down the side there. The galley plug is aluminium so should appear nice and shiney against the dull crank. It should be slightly recessed in the hole its in too. Check the other two plugs on the crank while you are in there.

  12. I have JE hiigh comp pistons in mine - the OEM rings would have been more expensive. I'm not disappointed!

    I have normal carb setup and open termis

    It seems to like super unleaded and the standard air filter

    I have tried a K&N airfilter with open airbox, but this makes it run lean with standard carb setting

    I intend to set up a set of carbs with dynojet needle etc. I have all the bits. I will try that with the open airbox next summer

    It's not a huge job... :)
    Do you have the uprated coils? They give no more outright power but they did eliminate plug fouling for me, gave a steadier idle and perkier throttle response as well.

  14. It might happen this summer, if we get a rainy spell and I am grounded for a weekend or two

    I have the stock 25 year old coils. It runs 100% sweet with the current setup. and I know it runs perfect with stock exhausts as well (if I want to swap back for a classic bike show entry).

    I am thinking of upgrading ignition components in the future, maybe: coils, multi-spark CDI and hall effect pickup?

  15. Visit to the bike yesterday, just to check the oil gallery plug. The good news is that it is not protruding, so the cases don't need to be split.

    Bit depressing seeing the bike strewn around the workshop in 100 pieces so I'll try and stay away for a bit. Still waiting for the frame to be welded.

    Not sure why my rings which were ordered from Holland are now in Germany, but the DHL website still suggests they'll be in London by close of business tomorrow!

    Enjoyed riding the 180,000km 650 Honda Bros yesterday. What a great bike!
     
  16. Maybe the Dutch supplier is close to the German border and the closest airport is therefore a German one.
     
  17. Well that's been a while, but apparently Langcourt misplaced the piston rings.

    OEM piston rings are more expensive than their weight in gold apparently!

    I should probably explain that I want to keep the bike as close to standard.

    Anyway I get a call on Tuesday that the bike is going back together. Said I'd be in on Saturday to see the progress. Called in yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised to see the bike back in one lump:

    Nice and clean, frame crack repaired, brace fitted, front fairing support straightened. Only slight error was mine - the paint I supplied was a bit too gold for the actual slightly silvery frame colour. I mean come on, how am I supposed to know, "Ducati champagne" just sounds fizzy to me:

    Not that I'm too fussed, just looking forward to picking it up in a few days.

  18. So anyway, the run in procedure - rev it normally (I don't thrash this bike, but I open the throttle medium hard), keep revs below 6,000 for the first couple of hundred miles, then gradually increase the limit. Change oil before 1,000 miles. Sound good?

    It's been run on regular unleaded, would using premium be better? Hopefully the flat spot that's occasionally noticeable at 3,800-4,000rpm will disappear.
     
  19. I would limit revs to around the same or 5000 for 200 miles, I would change the oil at around 500.

    I never found much difference between unleaded and premium but I stayed clear of premium anyway because of the ethanol content which might sod up the o-rings.

    The flat spot might just be a bit of balancing required - but I wouldn't fiddle with it much until it was run in - just keep an eye on the plug colour.
