Hi Chaps I wonder if you can help me please. I have a 1997 748 in monoposto form. The rear end is very stiff and I think may have been set for the track. The rebound and compression settings are simple to adjust but first I want to set the preload. I am setting this up for road rather than track and to me the nuts on the shock for the preload seem to be a long way down the thread. Does anyone have a dimension from the top of the threads to the top of the first nut as a rough guide. I know I need to set the sag to suit my weight but I am a little suspicious of the shock itself and before I set the sag to the 30mm dimn I would like to do a dimension check hence the question. Cheers John
By setting the sag, you will likely have to adjust the shock preload. This will mean the preload rings of the shock will end up where they need to be for your weight.
Hi conkers86. I weight just under 15 stone (210lbs or 95Kg) Not sure about the spring but at the moment I assume it is standard.
For info, my 916 with Ohlins shock: 10mm unloaded, 30mm loaded sag. Distance between top locknut on shock and upper end of thread is 26mm.
I am not the same weight...only 10 stone. Just gave the info to show what sort of preload may be typical on the spring, for info, like.
I would check the spring rate before trying anything else - it could be that it's a spring rated for rider plus pillion, which would feel much more harsh when riding one-up, whereas a spring correctly rated for rider weight should feel quite compliant on all but extreme spring preload and comp/reb clicker settings
When was the shock last serviced? If more than a few years ago it might be worth having it done and the right spring fitted at the same time (if not the right one for you). Had my old one done at Kais last year and wasn't bed price wise. New spring and shock body with a full service was less than £280.
