1200 DVT Leaking Rad Fix ?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Hyperextended, Jun 18, 2017.

  1. I returned home yesterday from the bike service and noticed coolant on the radiator.
Removed the panels and it is weeping from (around )the bottom bolt hole, not from it. warranty job you'd think ? but I could do without the 100s of miles back n forth to dealers etc and losing my bike for weeks so am wondering if anyone has used or knows of a quick lasting fix on a repair in this area ?
    Out of warranty in july

  4. So long as the problem was reported to a dealer inside of warranty, you should be fine. If need be, find another dealer.

  5. I'm not slating ducati bikes here, I love em so much I've had 2 new ones in 4 years.
Initial word from the top is that this isn't a warranty issue so Would anyone like to guess what they say is the cause of this rad leak ?
If anyone gets the correct answer, I'll donate £200 to charity !

  7. I too have a dvt with a leaky rad (2015 with touratech grill) , went to my local dealer and he photographed the prob and emailed to ducati - they agreed to replace under warranty ! - lucky as only 1 month warranty left and was quoted over 700€ for new rad. (Hyperextended- go to a different dealer mate!!)
However, told yesterday that part was on backorder and I am riding to south of France on Saturday.
Question for me now is do I put rad sealant inside or just keep an eye on it.
Considering that topping it up is a right pain in the arse as you need to remove all right hand panels:(
Apparently you cannot simply top up expansion tank as this will not fill the radiator!
Thanks for any words of wisdom...

  8. I wouldn't use a rad weld myself as I'm scared it may gunk the internals up somehow.
You can top the rad up via the expansion bottle, obviously when the bikes cold. just crack the top off the rad and fill via expansion tank and close the top when the rad overflows, then continue filling to the min/max levels, well that worked for me.
I did use a big syringe to get it in as the filler is awkward ;)
Ps, did you fit the rad guard yourself and where was yours leaking ?
    It's not the same
    Issue I have though.

  9. The leak is in the front behind the guard - so the guard didn't do its job.
    Guard was main dealer fitted.
If I can top up via expansion tank then great I can see that, but the dealer told me it wouldn't top the rad , only the expansion tank?
I also don't want to put any sealant inside - be like cholesterol ;(
Why do you get shit like this before a big trip ? Grrr,..

  10. Just checked owners manual (page350) and you can top up via expansion reservoir - hurrah
    Dealer is talking Bollox !

  11. It won't top the rad up unless you release the radiator cap as I mentioned :upyeah:

  12. @Hyperextended Your rad is leaking because there's to much air in your rear tyre, therefore making the bike jolt more over bumps causing your rad to leak.
Can I pick the charity :)

  14. Was it caused by your tax disc holder ? What do I win?
My 2011 Mutlistrada rad cracked and leaked, got a new one from dealer.

  15. That's defo a warranty job eh, as it is not a stone chip etc etc , it is a blatant fail, therefore its not your fault, therefore, warranty...Surely ??

  16. Haha, all of the answers so far seem more plausible to me than the reason they stated :p

  17. which was ??

  18. Don't tell me... they said your grip on the bars was so tight, the extra vibrations through the bike caused the surface of the rad to vibrate at the perfect frequency to achieve the 1450 degrees needed to start to melt the steel in the rad and thus... you have a leak.

Because the extra strong grip on the handlebars could not be foreseen, warranty denied.

  19. Because you jetwashed it.....
    Osmosis......
You must've filled up with diesel.....
WD40/ACF50 has somehow broken down the seal...
