750ss Not Starting

  1. As title says, I've been using the car as i need to replace chain and sprockets on the bike. But yesterday was so nice a day I thought sod it. I'll take the bike.
    Put all my gear on, uncovered it, turned the key and pressed that start button..... nothing.

    Fuel pump fires up
    Solenoid clicks
    Starter motor doesn't make a sound

    I've had a multimeter across the solenoid and the voltage across the solenoid is fine.

    My current thinking is that it may be a dodgy starter. Or just needs cleaning or rebuilding.

  2. When I had starting issues it turned out to be a dodgy earth connection, so I'd check that first if I were you. Look at the main earth - the connection stud on the engine. Good luck!
     
  3. Could still be the battery that's at fault. Your multimeter only needs very little power to indicated voltage so will not always indicate a faulty battery. Even though it shows 12v across the battery terminals with your meter connected when you press the starter button the huge demand that then puts on a defective battery totally saps any power it might have.
     
  4. See if the lights dim when you press the starter.
     
  5. Give the fuse at the top of the fuse box a good wiggle and make sure the blades are flat.
    This fuse was a big problem on my SS.
     
  6. You need more than 12.3 volts in the battery - 12.6 volts are about right.

    Take jump leads wire directly from the battery to the starter to see if it spins - connect the +ive first, then the -ive to the starter body; touch the loose end of the -ive to the -ive battery terminal.

    Also check the little plug in the end of the solenoid - these have a habit of falling off.

  7. As stated check all earth and connections.

  9. Problem solved. I checked the resistance through the starter to ground and it was nonexistent. Removed the top cap from the starter and the plate which holds the brushes and they were worn to nothing. Replacement ordered and fitted now starts on the button every time.
    And as always one problem fixed, another appears. One of my carb drain valves has decided to leak constantly. I've just plugged it for now until I have the time to remove the carbs to have a proper look :rollingeyes:
