748 Ignition Delay

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Tans826, Jul 16, 2017.

  1. Hey All
Got a weird problem with my 95 748. When I turn the ignition on nothing happens for a few seconds as if the battery is totally flat. Then all of a sudden everything comes on. This used to take a few seconds but now can be up to 30 which is very annoying.
Any ideas? I'm thinking it's a bad earth or something but don't know why it would all of a sudden come on as I don't move the bike or anything. If it could be an earth is there any known problem ones?
    Cheers in advance
    Dave

  2. Electrical gremlins normally equal new relay required.

  3. As said above, renew your relays, Not just the main one next to the battery but also the two in the back.

  4. Had a problem like that for years on my 748 and it turned out to be the side stand relay down at the left hand side of the battery

  5. Great advice, thanks guys. Will change all of them. Hadn't considered relays but makes more sense than an earth.

  6. Anyone wanna hazard a guess as to which relay is failing? Won't be starter as it doesn't even get that far.

  7. Start with swapping the two relays under the seat and having a look at the pins of each to look for corrosion or overheating. If the problem is one of those the fuel pump should immediately turn on with the ignition after you have swapped them. It is worth replacing these in any case. Check the ten way connector under the front rhs of the seat and the round connector under the front rhs of the tank for cleanliness and contacts, spray both with a contact preserving cleaner spray. If you have some switch cleaner spray it into the ignition key hole. You should also check and probably replace the yellow 40A relay down by the lhs of the battery. Not sure your bike had a safety relay which would also be down there, the big one is the flasher unit

  8. Did you check the side stand relay

  9. Thanks Denzil I will check all of that.

Vtwin dave which is the side stand Relay?

  10. '95 bike won't have side stand relay. As well as the relays, it's worth checking the wiring from the ignition switch. Connector at loom can suffer corrosion and the wires leaving the switch unit can break. Could also be the switch unit itself, internally.
If you have a meter, check for power feeds at the loom connection when the ignition is switched on.
