Looking to buy my first multi, seen plenty of good looking examples (pictures and descriptions), basically want a 10, 11 or 12 plate S model. Also want panniers and top box, FSH, low mileage, but not so close to 15k that I'll be immediately up for a major service... A lot I've seen in my price bracket (around £7,300 - 8,000) are showing about 19,000-20k miles on the clocks. Should I prioritise lower mileage over a dealer warranty? Also is it more advisable to buy from an authorised ducati dealer rather than other dealers or private? Thanks for any advice!
I'd recommend a warranty though a ducati dealer, as they will be on good terms with ducati italy if you were unfortunate too suffer a major issue. Although only a few have suffered a crank going bang. Do you do big miles or are you going to be hibernating it over winter & using another bike??
Thanks GunZenBomZ! Sound advice. Plan to sell my existing bike so the multi will be it. Will be doing some Euro trips as well as a bit of commuting and some weekend fun.
I agree with Gunz. A dealer warranty gives peace of mind, and if a bike has been well maintained and dealer serviced the miles are really so not important. My 2010 had 18k when I p/xed it with no serious issues, and my 2013 had 24k when sold but it was a minter. I've never had big trouble with either, and my present 2015 bike has 15k now, also without anything more than niggles. Like you I do Euro trips each year and the Multi is the perfect bike for crossing continents and scratching round B roads.
Nice one! Thanks Coman... Helps to know from ppl who have been there before. I'm definitely focused on the full service history from an approved ducati service agent, so if I can get that plus low miles, even better I guess!
The early ones had poorly made cylinder heads, a problem* which manifests itself only after 15 or 20 K miles needing new heads. Here's my advice: get one which has done the miles and had the heads replaced under warranty. Don't get one with low miles, so that when the problem arises (as it will do) you will have to fix it at your own expense. And if you choose not to take this advice - on your own head be it. * namely, coolant begins to leak into the exhaust ports through tiny cracks in the casting, which gradually get worse.
Thanks for your advice Pete! Just to clarify, by early ones, do you mean the first of the 2010 batch or all of the 2010-2012 models?
The very first single spark models, 2010-12. Heads let go (if they are going to go) at around 15k (mine did), so a low miler is no guarantee. Costs about £3,500 to replace I think, but doubt they could source heads now? Better off with an early bike that has had the replacement heads. But as said, Ducati warranty is safest bet.
