1200 New 1260 Planned?

  7. I might trade up my 1190 for a 1290S next year or the year after. KTM have a time-honoured tradition of engineering teething problems into new models. Its been true of every new bike since the 950 Adv with the possible exception of the 1290 SA. They're never catastrophic, just annoying. By the second year of production they've quietly listened to all the moans and addressed the problems. I'd be hanging out for the 2018 1290S when the model's had its traditional first year shake-down. Though saying that, every time I ride my 1190 it never feels lacking, even getting on to it from the Superduke. Its the handling that does it. When a bike's handling is superb you can forgive so many other lesser details.

    I'd need reassurance about reliability before I bought a new Ducati, especially a Multi. Reaching 15-20,000 miles without problems is neither here nor there. That's 18 months riding for me. Bikes like these should be continent crossers. They should be clocking up 70,000 miles without problems. I'm confident with the KTM 1190 because its the old sportsbike RC8 engine and its well proven to be capable of exactly those kind of mileage and though the chain is a maintenance commitment at least its not prone to the expensive transmission problems that too many of the BMW boxers have had. OK you've got to adjust it, clean it and oil it and carry the stuff to do it around with you but chains are the most fixable drive option. There's no road-side fix with a broken belt or a knackered shaft.

    The XR is out of the question for me because its an I/L four and it just bores me. Its got stacks of top-end power but compared with a gutsy twin its got bugger all anywhere else. It has got a fantastic chassis and brakes. best in class until the 1290S cam out which has equalled it IMO. Saying that the latest Triumph Explorer is pretty damn good too. But its heavy and the engine isn't thrilling.
    I've ridden the XR twice and I can't say I noticed terrible vibes. But if its only through the bars, that's fixable.
    Haven't ridden the very latest GS. The last one I tried was the 2016 bike when I rode it back-to-back with an 1190 and ended up choosing the 1190.
    People love to take the piss out of the GS but the fact remains its one of the world's biggest-selling bikes for a reason. I like them but the excitable kid in me likes KTMs even more. (It likes Ducatis too, but for a bike to do big miles on they scare my wallet stiff).

    Or chain replacement can be done roadside. No idea about belt. Never had one
     
  10. Lockwire on a near 100ft/IIb torque bike ? Good luck with that !!! When mine broke, it snapped in the middle of the link, lock wiring that would be....Interesting. And who carries a spare chain ?? :thinkingface:
     
  11. 10mm lockwire. No problem. Be good for a few hundred miles ;)

    It's something that can be bought and installed quickly tho. A breakdown fella can get the chain and fit it. Ie you can continue your journey.

    No idea if you can with a belt.

  13. If your SA troubles with GS' had been with Multistradas, the motorcycling internets would have melted. Much as I like ('respect' might be a better word) BMWs, I've never quite understood their reputation for finish and reliability - on big club trips, that certainly hasn't been my experience.

    Next year is also probably a new bike year for us, and our test ride list will include the GS (I've just ridden an RT and Gill and I both found it competent and comfy but boring, but understand that a decat & remap on the boxers works wonders), the KTMs (Super Duke GT once it gets the new instruments & lights from this year's 1290), the 1290S itself and the 1260 Multistrada. Having taken an xDiavel for a good thrash down Highland roads, that engine is a peach, although lacking the top-end oomph that we're used to on the Multi.

    That however may change: the xDiavel engine has CO figures of 0.6%, which puts it very lean, with an air:fuel ratio of very roughly 15.5:1, outside the optimum zone for power output. The 2018 Multistrada however has CO figures of 1.5%, which puts it close to the sweet spot for power output, with air:fuel around 14.5:1. That could easily translate to power in excess of 170bhp which, if they're playing the numbers game with KTM, is where it needs to be.

  14. Fair point, but a break down blokey can also get me to a dealer, and you're also talking fairly extreme here as breakages to either are very rare.
    Can I also point something else out to all you anti Belt folk also ? Every quality car I have ever owned have used cam chains as they are considered maintenance free with longer lives etc etc. Every non Ducati motorcycle I have ever owned use cam chains also, and yet every single one of you on this forum rides around on a bike where a huge part of the engine movement and stresses are belt driven......Just saying ;)

  15. PS. 10mm lockwire ?? IE 1cm thick lockwire ? Good luck bending that through a chain link :grinning:

Kind of back on point but they should be putting that v4 lump in the hyper....at very least the MTS twin lump but ive been banging on about that for ages...with regards to an alternative bike....gen4 z1000. If i had to sell all of mine and keep one - that'd be it in a heartbeat. Granted mines had a fair bit done to it but, its done everything ive asked of it in the last 3 years with not one hiccup, nothing. Totally reliable, starts on the button no matter what 26k between valve checks, gloriously analog (not even abs) and will stay with an r1m well into prison time speeds (yes, ive done it - even he was surprised (did the comedy double take) to see me sitting on his back wheel at 140) sat up, i might add...definately another story if we got into the twisties but even then with a nitron r3 on the rear it handles brilliantly also. Its bloody comfortable (300 mile round trip a couple of months back to the forum BBQ) with a 10 minute stop each way. Ecu work done by chris at CJS unlocked 148 at the wheel although its going back in, in a couple of weeks for a remap as ive changed the exhaust config.

  18. I'm guessing 1mm (or 0.8) - 10mm lockwire would be useful if you had a race series for supertankers, but not otherwise ;-)
