Tirox Chain Cleaner / Is It Just Me ??

Discussion in 'Detailing and cleaning' started by Steve m, Jun 10, 2017.

  1. A work colegue of mine has been raving about his latest gadget ' Tirox chain cleaner'

I looked into it, found this vid, is it just me, or is this just over engineered tat ?
Looks to me like as you rotate the chain through the brush, it just moves the crud/ grit onto the next link & so on ??
Surely a toothbrush or washing up brush would do a better job
Also the aerosol chain cleaner is kerosene based ( what us brits call paraffin )
£20 for the 'chain cleaning kit' on eBay...I think not ! Gallon of paraffin & my toothbrush for me !!

  2. crap stuck in the Bowl?
hit it with a brush, then flush?
that's how the chain cleaner works; loosen it flush it, with the parrafin?
Some body will start the motor, put in gear?
What happens if the brush is dragged into the sprockets?
got to keep the fingers out?
new idea? made a bracket the hold the brush in place, this device works best when speed hits 200kph? leave it in place, ride everywhere at 200kph never have a dirty chain?
need help with the patent for the brush retention bracket?
    Crowd funding?
can i post my bank account numbers here?

  3. I have always enjoyed the guy's reviews from webbikeworld. However toothbrush & a homemade sloping guttering gadget is how I do my chain cleaning using paraffin.

The one chain gadget I highly recommend is grease ninja

  4. Looks like a sloution looking for a problem

Personally i use SDOC chain cleaner and a half inch paint brush for superb results

Those stiff brushes bugger the O rings

This is my chain cleaned after a 750 mile trip to Scotland cleaned as above chain.jpg

  5. What a load of shit !!. Whats wrong with a paint brush and some paraffin ??

  6. Liar! That chain has never been used! :)

  7. 3K done on it now in all weathers although its not huge mileage yet

I do get a bit anal about chain cleaning and tend to do it every 400 miles or so but it pays off as my XR did 15k before the chain even needed adjustment

  8. Paint brush for me too but I've stopped using paraffin. My Superduke has a lot of broken O rings and the workshop who fit my tyres say that is down to paraffin. Not sure. I've got two other bikes which get the same treatment and there's no problem with them. However, I started using brake cleaner and a couple of dealers have since let on that they've been using it for years for cleaning chains. Works a treat and at a tenner a gallon from the local motor factors its waaay cheaper than aerosol chain cleaner - which smells suspiciously like its exactly the same stuff.

  9. Paraffin is oil based, so it should be ok. I've been using it for years and no issues with "O" rings at all ?? The stuff to avoid is the Alcohol based products as they do fuck the rings. :upyeah:

  10. Parafin and a small paint brush for the last 9 years. Used to use DID , but current is Afam, and is bardly worn after 15000 miles, has not needed adjusting in the last 8000 miles, infact only a small adjustment after the first 350 then another small about 1500 after that, its doing much bettervthan the top end DID.

  11. ????Orings are Nitrile or Viton, Paraffin shouldnt affect them impervious to paraffin????
brake cleaner works better because has a higher solvent effect, softens the the gunk faster
but does it reduce the lubricant on the other side of the Orings faster, leach out the grease from where it is required? brake cleaner seperate from lubricant grease better to allow the viscosity of the grease to return
or like paraffin simply reduce the grease viscosity??
the grease on both sides of the O rings interchanges, otherwise why lubricate chains on the wrong side of the Oring seals, are we talking Orings or X rings
The beauty of spray lubricant is they are applied at low viscosity, for coverage, and as the solvents leave the viscosity increases (dries) to resist fling off? Better a chain with the correct lubrication than a perfect clean chain with no lubrication?

  12. Thread title corrected

  13. O rings on the Superduke chain. Its the original chain and its DID. The Streetfighter has an Ognibene chain which wearing very well (Afam sprockets). I'll probably buy an Ognibene replacement for for the KTM.
The brake cleaner evaporates rapidly and leaves no residue. I see that as a good thing as the fresh lubrication comes into direct contact with the chain's surfaces but to get the benefit thorough cleaning is required to ensure all dirt has been removed as well. Some say you shouldn't deep clean a chain as this washes the lubricant out of the links but unless you thoroughly clean surely you're washing the road dirt in? Better to my mind to remove everything, allow evaporation and then relube a dry chain.
Its an expensive business getting a thorough clean with aerosol cleaner. I'm lucky if I get two cleans out of one can (I clean and lube about every 400 miles and relube inbetween if it looks dry). Brake cleaner applied with a pump sprayer really washes the links out properly. I lube with S-Doc White Lube.

  14. I use paraffin or brake cleaner with a toothbrush then Wurth High Performance Dry Chain Lube, seems OK.

FWIW I use Tsubaki Sigma XRG chains (40Kn+ tensile strength) and Talon sprockets. I also use an L-CAT line laser to ensure all the rings line up between the front and rear sprockets - this has drastically reduced sprocket wear and I should imagine chain wear too.

Be keen to see this guttering gadget as I'd love to make less mess when doing this chore!

  15. And if they don't ?? How do you adjust the sprockets ??

  16. Seriously try the SDOC chain cleaner it does not just evaporate, you have to rinse it off with water and all the shite comes away an i get at least 5 cleans to a tin

  17. It's a chain alignment tool mate so you just adjust the chain tensioners until all the rings line up - it's a (much) more accurate method than using the marks on a swingarm or using a straight edge or whatever. Was honestly amazed at the difference it made and that's despite its relatively high purchase price (still less than the cost of one chain though :upyeah:)

  18. Oh I get ya, at first I thought you meant it was used for chain tension.....Doh !! So not needed if you have a single sided swing arm and eliptical adjusters though whereby the wheel can only point one way ?? :upyeah:

  19. Used paraffin and brush for years on all types of chains without problems
Wurth dry lube after cleaning doesn't flick of

You are welcome @Air Duck; this is it in position.

A simple construction of small 4" (green-house) guttering glued & twisted slightly away. So it catches the over spray effect of scrubbing with a toothbrush. The bowl at the end then catches the bulk of the paraffin for other tasks that don't require clean fluid. I have actually thought about a sand siphon but not got around to building it. To see if I can filter the dirt out of the used paraffin.

Shown also is the grease ninja tool's that I use for my 525 & 530 chains. The central plastic notch slides along the middle of the chain & the spray holes direct chain lube onto the correct area only.
