999 Slipper Clutch Recommendations Please

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by mileypau, Aug 21, 2017.

  1. Hi guys - last track day with Doris was at Rockingham National Circuit - banging down through the gears for the hairpin before start finish straight I finally acknowledge she needs a slipper clutch.

Thoughts on DP vs Sigma vs anyone else?

    Tricky to set up?
    How much wear from them?
Do they go off regularly with a bit of dust build up - will I be forever stripping and cleaning?
    Screeching?

    Anything else......advice much appreciated

  2. i had an NGR slipper clutch in my 853,it was brilliant, think jhp sell um, cant remember how much but it really worked well.

  3. thanks - not heard of those. Take it from pic' you tested it on track?

  4. I have the following types:
Standard issue ramp only slipper in 749R
Standard issue ball and ramp in 1098R
Bucci/DP ball and ramp in 916

All work well. No set up/adjustment required apart from normal clutch plate height check.
Some people (no names mentioned....) seem to spend forever swapping plate thicknesses/order/quantity but I have just got the bog standard plates etc in mine and have no probs.
Maintenance wise, strip n regreased once or twice a year, depending on use.

Being really critical, the Bucci is smoothest. Cannot tell much difference between the two R ones.

  5. Yes used only on track. Don't really need a slipper on the road.

  6. Thanks RickyX; good to hear.

Being thick - Bucci is the DP product?

On eBay at the moment is a slipper from a Monster S4R I think - described as DP ATCorse with billet basket.
I'm assuming all the dry clutch stuff is pretty interchangeable?

  7. I believe Bucci made them and then they were sold with a DP brand mark on them. Mine has both names on it.
The parts aren't all interchangeable between each other, but some are....
For instance, STM evo 48 tooth stuff doesn't fit with a DP 12 tooth clutch, but the whole assembly can be swapped. Hope that makes sense.

  8. Like Ricky, I have the basic early DP 3 ramp slipper clutch on my 748R and 853RS track bike and a later 6 ball and ramp DP slipper clutch on my 1098R. Main difference between the early DP 3 ramp and the later 6 ball and ramp DP/aftermarket is it has a steel basket not an aluminium one. The aluminium basket can be shagged in as little as 6000 miles. Up the cost and you can go for a variety of mechanisms. The EVR 48 tooth set up lasts longer. It's a case of how deep are your pockets. For the record, I prefer the basic DP slipper over the 6 ball and ramp but that's me. It's the same as Betamax vs VHS :). Andy

  9. i dont do that many track days on Doris - that's down to escalating value. But i do ride er, enthusiastically, when I do - it would be criminal not to; it's what they are built for. So it is more down to the slipper giving some mechanical sympathy on those down changes and I for one would go for robustness (steel over ally basket) and smooth action. I'll put a watch out and see if anything comes up now I'm a little clearer what i'm looking out for.

    thanks for the replies

  10. What's a betamax??

  11. double sided clutch...you dont need to rewind

  12. Unsure if this will fit, https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/used-aftermarket-dry-slipper-clutch.40414/ but I'm sure someone on here will confirm either way and it's still for sale. Andy

  13. I use a Ducati Corse four post skipper in my 749, it's a fantastic bit of kit. They are more difficult to obtain these days but I know of a chap who is selling old new stock items for £900 ish.

It's a ball and ramp style with interchangeable springs to suite track and style. I used to run a Sigma slipper which was very good too, but this is another level on again.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  14. I wanted the clutch biting point at the exact point where I felt comfortable with it, so that meant road test then if not happy back to the garage, plus my old mucker it kept slipping after the bike had warmed up, ie 6-7 miles down the road.
It now works lovely thank you very much.

  15. I cant compare with others, however my 48T Sigma unit is working great on my 996. Done 6 track days this year on it without any problems.

  16. last 999s and streetfighter both have DP slippers which are fine but I preferred the feel of the sigma fitted to my old superduke over the DP slippers, Buying new ide have the sigma

  17. Came out about when my Pillips v2000 did :)

  18. I use a Sigma and a DP clutch on my bikes. Personally I find the Sigma better for combined use on road and track. Never had a problem with it.
