I would hope (and have never had first hand evidence otherwise) that a transaction has been reversed within the U.K. Banking system in the way you describe. The bank may take funds and suspend them subject to investigations but they don't give it back to the depositor.
Here the banks investigate if fraud is indicated the will take money back out, but if the transaction was done in good faith ie money was delivered as the result of a mistake by the sender; they are generally not interested in recovery? (wont assist) sorry about my jump back at you, but thought you going against my credibility? i like to talk to people make me think, I have the care of some famous bikes, bit of a burden? When I went to pick up my bike in January, I transfered the funds in front of the buyer....after 1 hour the monies still have not cleared. The seller said "Let's load the bike I trust you" I felt very embarrassed..so I left with a 11k bike without actually paying for it. The seller called me on my way home "The funds have cleared"...I felt very happy as was considering to take the bike back as it was not fair.
