  3. WoW! that's some size cable going into that mount! dose it double up as a mount for a mig welder to?

  4. Its a Garmin Zumo 660 Mount with intergrated power cable...

Tell me the difference am not a sparky...

Now i know where to place the power leads... Do i unplug the white connector and use the other male side of it... this white plug isnt connected to anything ?

  5. Your current (excuse the pun) setup will drain battery, even without anything hooked up to it.

The little white connector will ensure power is only oven when the ignition is on. Best thing is to take the other part of the connector and solder your lead straight to that. You can cut away the black heat shrink to get to the wires.

You could also take the opportunity to wire up a 12v USB adapter to the same wires (ample headroom to power both) and charge your phone that way too. I personally don't like those cigarette adapter things, hence my 12v to USB suggestion.

  6. You need a ignition live i would have thought and not a permanent live. With a ignition live there will only be feed/power to the sat nab unit when the ignition is turned on. With a permanent live, you will always have power going to it constantly even with the ignition off. This will therefore more than likely cause a battery drain and your battery to go flat when the bikes not in use.

I don't own a multi so I can't help you with the 'white plug' I'm afraid. Hopefully someone here will be able to help you with that.

To be able to tell whether you have a ignition feed or not, you need a multimeter. Hold the positive (red) lead of the multimeter on the wire you want to test and the negative (black lead) on a suitable earth (engine mount bolts or battery negative etc) with the ignition off you will be getting zero volts. Turn the ignition on and you will see the multimeter read approx 12 volts depending on the condition of your battery....

If you are constantly getting 12volts whether the ignition is on or off then this is a permanant live.

  7. Without doubt ! Defo No No ! Putting it through the ignition will also insure that's it fused, twice maybe, but better safe than a dead battery. 100% agree with Daniel & JH

  8. That is just a dead live ....you have a little bit of wire coming from the white connection that " doesn't go anywhere" that's the bit you need to connect onto using a small clamp type connector / solder/ tape/ whatever you want that takes it through ignition which has already been pointed out.

  9. So ive been running supposerly dead live for a good easy 5-6 years on my 749... touch wood ive never had a flat battery

  10. Just advising the 'correct way' that's all. Glad your bikes been spot on though...

  11. Depends a lot on the satnav charger and wether you run a garage with an optimate.

Some satnav chargers have LED's and things, that are always on and always draining. Even with that, a bike on a charger or used regularly, will never have an issue. It's when you leave it a while and need it, that you'll find a dead battery.

  12. Just one more point, Ducati do sell a separate lead that plugs direct to that white connector on the bike, its part of the Ducati Nav system but can be sold separately as that's how I connected mine :upyeah: This lead then runs direct to your black garmin mount !!

  13. Well Ive been reading up since been on here and since I bought the pp, off a chap on here said lithium chargers are for lithium battery... Well the lithium battery on the 749 hasn't been charged on a lithium charger over the years, and since hearing that information ive stopped using it so ive been quite lucky...

  14. PS, the other side of white plug not connected is just a blank from what I recall

  15. Lol. Not sure what you may have wired up on your 749, By Dead Live I meant that it's live until you connect something to it, ie the fact that the bit of wire you were referring to " wasn't going anywhere"

  16. Well from photos ive shown is exactly how ive wired, my 749 direct to the battery... my sat nav is only connected when needed and not permanent fixed...

  17. Listen Mate, you can wire it up to your main switchboard for all I really care, I owned a 2013 Multi and fitted usb/sat and like others have pointed out there is a designated supply for wiring such accessories that's all, and running it through your ignition is the safest way to do it.
You may think it not permanent, because it only connects as far as your concerned when you clip your sat nav on. Wrong, what you have created there is a permanent live feed running from your battery up to the sub connection plate of the zumo, those pins on the sub plate, one of which will be supplying power for when you connect the nav.
Personally I wouldn't like to leave those exposed to the elements and such when sat not in use, knowing there's a permanent live there somewhere, cross the pins accidentally with something you'll blow a fuse at best. There is the cover I know, but it still wouldn't do me. :bomb:

  18. And where is that permanent live? Oh yeah in front of a petrol tank which never ever has vapour coming out eh?

  19. The zumo mount is not open to the elements with the proper cover which also has a rubber seal reducing any risk... so reducing the oxygen factor...

At the end day if I go boom... It wouldn't matter to you if I die.. you don't know me so it would really matter or shed a tear, same goes for you...
