How To Put 10mm Pre- Load On Ohlins Forks

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by CRYSTALJOHN, Sep 13, 2017.

  1. I would appreciate some advice. I have just purchased a Ducati 1000DS , fitted with Ohlins front and rear, and want to restore all suspension settings to standard. The handbook states Fork pre-load is 10mm.

How do I measure the 10mm? I could calculate it if I knew the pitch of the thread I suppose but I assume there is an easier method. I have backed off the existing pre-load using the 17mm nut on the top of the forks 2 complete turns, now how do I measure the 10mm I require?

  5. Cheers Richard, sense at last!

  6. John, Ricky is correct it has a 1mm pitch thread on the preload adjustment screw, 10mm is ten complete turns out from fully home. You measure from the flat top face of the hex part of the fork tube top nut to the flat on the top face of the 17mm fork adjustment hex

  8. Thanks Denzil
I'm new to Ohlins forks I didn't notice any discernible change when I turned the 17mm nut on the top of the forks 2 complete turns anti clockwise, which was as far undone as possible.
So I believe that to now put on 10mm of pre-load onto the spring I must now turn the nut 10 turns clockwise?
    Thanks for your help.

  9. There won't be any measurable change at the adjuster nut. As you turn it it compresses the spring inside but externally does not change height like a Showa preload adjuster.
Back it all the way out, anti-clockwise and then 10 turns clockwise to add the 10mm preload.

@CRYSTALJOHN , are you bringing the fuck-ugly-strada to Brands??

  10.
  11. That's what I was unfamiliar with Richard, I was expecting to see a change of height from the top of the 17mm nut relative to top of fork.
    Now understand cheers.
Fuck ugly strada will remain under thick covers in the garage, bringing the 848 mate
    See you there.

  12. Maybe an obvious point but make sure you count how many turns it takes to back all the way out, just so you have a reference to get it back as you started.

  13. This is John we are talking about he probably put tipex on the thread :)

    Roll on Friday :)

  14. I've just disassembled the forks down to replace a leaking seal and refresh oil.
It was my understanding that my only reference point was undoing the 17mm nut anti clockwise as far as it will go which I was presuming equates to zero Pre-load.
Am I on the right track, or is there possibly something I am doing wrong?

  15. If what Ricky said is right, 1 turn = 1mm, wind all the way out, but if tape to mark for and bolt then 10 revs in :)

  16. Yes, that is correct. I just thought you would want to know what it was set at before for record, even though it was not good.

  17. Got you Dave. Appreciate your help, think I now understand how it all works.
