Who's Using Michelin Power Rs?

Discussion in 'Tyres' started by JamOnIt, Apr 18, 2017.

  1. Tyre pressures are a funny thing, 26 rear might be OK for someone running at the front of the fast group but maybe over 30 for slower riders, sometime higher pressures clean up tyres if they're not being used hard enough.

ie. It's not worth much using someone else's pressures unless they're running the same bike and pace.

  2. Id say a safe bet for a novice group rider is 30/30. Then take pressures as soon as your session ends and see where you're at.

I've run 26/29 For quite a while now with racetecs rr.

  3. 30/30 hot won't go far wrong on track form most track biased tyres

I usually use 32f and 28r hot on supercorsa or racetecs

On supercorsa SP on track I was told to run 34f 31r hot

  4. Ok so my rear is on it’s wear bars so that did 3500 miles and really gone square so the handling is awful.
Front has not faired to well either as it has got a big step in it and only has around 1mm of tread left.
Great tyres and will be popping a new set on in March time as there is no point me ruining a set in my winter riding.
Have decided to try a set of Metzeler Z8 which will be fitted this week.

  5. Did Rockingham running 30/26 hot in inters after advise from tyre guy. Held up ok. Not perfect but better. These seem to like lower pressure.

  6. If you're minded to try sports touring tyres its worth giving the Roadtec 01s a go. They're a step on from the Z8s. Wet and dry grip is phenomenal for this class of tyre and the profile is a touch sportier than the Z8s. Dearer though.

  7. Stuck a set of Roadtec 01 on and they are great, quick warm up in very low temperatures, fantastic grip in the pouring rain and good feedback. Only gripe is they have quite a square profile and it makes the bike harder and a lot slower to turn in. Done 2.5 thousand miles on them and they look good.

  8. Just done the same although no miles yet. Have been using M7RRs but doing 10,000 miles a year is unneccessarily pricey getting 3000 miles from a set. Hoping the 01s will give me better mileage although I know I’m sacrificing “sports bike” handling. Andy

  9. Removed my Roadtec 01 today they have some life left in them for winter, stuck on a new set of Michelin Power RS tyres ready for summer riding. got a set fitted all in for £260 from GTC Guildford , cracking service from them as always.

  10. And about £50 getting there and back lol

  11. This is a road based review and tyre pressures were 32f/32r cold on a 1098 Streetfighter. I used these tyres on a trip around the French southern alps so got chance to hit excellent twisties which is where you’ll want to be with these tyres.

I’m used to Metz m7rr and Metz racetec rr k3 on the road so you got a frame of reference for them.

The power rs compared to the m7rr turn in better and settle nicely when leant over. You get a lot of feedback and you can feel the mechanical grip - very confidence inspiring. Straight line stability seems fine even with my forks raised in the clamps but this bike is über stable anyways..

Compared to the Metz racetec rr k3 - not as grippy, the k3 s are like **** to a blanket where you can take serious liberties, but in a road situation still good. Where you lose a little in outright dry grip to the k3 you gain massively in wet grip. On balance if you contemplate needing a wet weather safety margin you’d choose the power rs over the k3.

    But...

Power rs wet weather performance compared to the m7rr is lacking. The tread pattern doesn’t ‘feel’ like it can clear water as quickly and the front feels vague. The m7rr has better feedback from both the front and back in the wet. On the rear the power rs squirmed about which can be fun after a while but gives you mild underpants moments when you’re not expecting it. So you need a gentle right hand in the wet..

I really enjoyed riding the bike with the power rs fitted and even though I knew I could’ve been quicker in the wet on different tyres they felt safe enough and had that important margin you want in the back of your head. In the dry they did everything I asked of them and had margin for more..

I got to the edge of the tyres over the duration of the trip. The carcass shape makes that harder to do than on the m7rr but when you ride with a couple of very competitive lads these things eventually happen.

All in all I’d recommend them. :)
