Never worked on one with a standard can, can't believe it would be designed with a QR rear wheel and swingarm but you have to faff around...
I can't remember which models it applies to, but a couple of multistradas I have worked on required the after market can removing to get the rear...

The older bikes used to have a knock when the alternator came slack which sounded like the clutch. This also had an effect on the sprag
You sure you don't have a problem with the sprag clutch?
