Why shouldn't they last? They're essentially the same as timing belts used on cars and they last for 100,000 miles on some models, all with worse...

We watched it last night, I always wonder how people let stuff like that get so bad!? The tissue they removed was only a couple of pounds lighter...
Great little bike, 2001 will still be a carby model so they're generally reliable, pretty simple to maintain. Make sure it's serviced regularly...
