Obviously the various countries are not the same...where did you visit? I certainly found Algeria not so laid back.
It's also one of my most favourite visited places too. Atlas Mountains, Ouarzazate, Essaouira... I'll never, ever, ever forget riding a camel...
If you feel you are being over hassled by the sellers I found a firm "NON MERCI" worked wonders. ;)
It kinda depends how far you are away...if it's a huge coach ride to the Spanish port I wouldn't do it as you spend most of the day there and back...
There are some areas where the terrain is so rocky that on the roof is defo justified. South of France and Corsica for sure.

Make sure you get the correct spec of submersible hose, so many places sell fuel hose that they say is fine, but is only ok in a dry setting.:upyeah:
