Hi I own a 1098 fitted with Zards end cans, every now and then the orange engine warning light comes on but no error codes and if ti turn the engine off momently and restart it the light will go out and stay off for days! anyway I just removed the exhaust heat shield and watched the exhaust butterfly operate and noticed its opening and closing inline with throttle control until the orange light comes on then it fails to work! what is the cause and cheapest remedy??? Thanks
Possibly a seized exup valve due to lack of lubrication. Dump the Exup is the easiest remedy. Get rid of the cables to the valve and then either: 1. Replace the cable linkage with one of these â–º DUCATi 1098 848 1198 VENTIL SERVO MOTOR EXUP BYPASS â–º | eBay 2. Disable the exup in the ECU and completely remove the motor as well as the cables I went route 2. I used the 'Writer' software from the guy who does Ducatidiag. Works a treat. Dumped all the exup junk and no CEL to boot. If you want to go route 1 then I have a brand new part you can have for £15 shipped
Hello, Route 1 sounds good! How does that work? I'm not a mechanic so is it a easy job to do? also do I remove the butterfly valve and if so what do I put in its place?
The exup valve stays in place, held in the open position by the spring on the pully. The gizmo bolts onto the exup motor and fools it into thinking that the cables are still in place. It's pretty easy to do, the hardest part is getting at the bolt holding the cable bracket to the exhaust mount. I bought mine just in case route 2 didn't work. If you want it then PM me.
If the exup is the cause, then yes. I've done this mod on both my Ducati and Triumph D675, and to date have not had any CEL's.
the exup! (butterfly valve to me!) seems to be working fine, only stopped working when the orange light came on! to me something putting on the orange light on stops the servo operating opening and closing the exup??
After the butterfly cycles at at startup it should stay closed till 5000 revs or whatever it is when it opens. It's not really an exup as on the old Yamaha's it's just to get it through noise regulations, not for any low rev back pressure jiggery pokery!
The usual issues are the valve is sticking or the cables need lubing or adjusting. As Anth says, these valves are there to attenuate the noise to get through emissions tests. Best place for them is the bin. Although not a Ducati, this is worth a read HOW TO: Free a Seized EXUP Valve - Triumph675.Net Forums

And it's definitely not throwing an error code? Can you hook it up to ducatidag and check the error log history? I'm wondering if it's a lambda sensor starting to fail and that's what's throwing the light and knocking the exhaust valve off.
No nothing showing! I haven't got access to "ducatidag"! unless I guess I take it to a main dealer! also when the orange is on the servo unit stops working?
It would cost you less for the cables for ducatidag than it would to get a dealer to hook it up to diagnose......you'll get the pair of them for less than £20. I'd definitely like to see the error log just to make sure.
OK so you can get the cables off fleabay, but what do you conect them to? I guess the plug for the DDA and a PC and what software do you need to interpret the error codes?
