Another question Earlier this year I had my front forks serviced and oil changed, and the headstock bearings replaced (i think thats the correct term) I also had the suspension re set up for me. Due to pressures of work or lack of lucrative work I have found little time to use my bike. The suspension set up feels great for cornering however in a straight line at about 105+ MPH (obviously not on public roads!!!!) the bike seems to get a real wobble on. I have had the front wheel rebalanced to see if this helped - NO and it was hardly out. I have tried to accelerate through it but it just gets worse I have made sure the hand guards are equal I have looked on Ducati.ms and whilst this has been spoken about there appears to be no definitive answer or solution It does not happen 100% of the time but about 80% and only in a straight line gentle bends at over 100MPH seem fine. This situation leaves me feeling slightly less confident than I used to be as this was not previously the case. So your thoughts please PS: I think a steering damper might just be a band-aid to a bigger issue
there's a slight 'they all do that at that speed sir' tendency but also off top of head - are you of average weight and is rear suspension set particularly low and also possibly soft in relation to front?
I am Mr. Average (i think) 85kg in my birthday suit, & just under 5'8". In relation to rear suspension I don't know I would have to ask the question?
just under 5'8".......................:wink:.............so 5'6" then... Does it work both ways? As i am just over 15 stonnes...... doesnt make you a bad person......
Steering damper? Ducati.ms website for hyper section seems to suggest its a pre-requisite for the bike once your suspension is set correctly. I had mine 2 years and not having ridden it much (less than 1000m) I finally Got round to setting my suspension (previous owner much bigger heavier than me) and I have been shocked how much wobble I getting above 85. A quick look of Ducati.ms showed everyone fitting GPR v4 or Scott ohlins units. I have added one to my Shopping list. I Can't find a supplier for scott Unit In uk.
'getting suspension set up' - it's such a vast subject isn't it - are you saying that you could see an improvement above 85 after yours was re-set Steve?
No the exact opposite. The bike had way too much preload front an rear for me as previous owner was a big lad. I am 5'8 if I am lucky and 80kg. Preload now front 0 & pretty much 0 on rear. 10mm front sag & 28mm rear now. Compression an rebound are just Below stock settings. She was incredibly harsh before I made any changes (but stable) now she is more comfortable ride but I have had several 75-80+ wobbles, one particular left hand bend on my way home causes it every time. Years worth of relevant info on Ducati.ms but recurrently, steering dampers figure high on list of goodies.
I like your thought pattern!! However my wife is definitely 5'8" and I am just a tiny bit shorter (with heels she's over six foot - but thats another story). and I made a mistake i am under 85kg like 82kg to be precise I know this is not my excuse for being a bad person ....but thats another story too "I may be addicted to brake fluid, but I can stop anytime"
It's a rare site and she says she doesn't like walking in them - I said "i didn't buy them for you to walk in........."
Got a fix - hope it lasts Just had a friend/mechanic take front wheel off and reassemble it in the correct Ducati order and bounce the front to make sure spindle correct before tightening everything up. Check tyre pressures and upped the front a little to 36psi Had several runs on it with the clock reading up to 136. No wobble It feels just like before, light at the front but no wobble, I can resume my hooligan ways with confidence again. Thank you for all your help and it was from the Ducati.ms site that mentioned in one of their threads that this was a possible solution. I hope this may help others
\ Have you looked at this Ducati Hypermotard 1100 GPR Stabilizer V4 (08-11) - Ducati - GPR - Steering Dampers If a damper really floats ya boat Somehow I really think that a damper is not in the DNA of a hyper - just my opinion
I don't wanna spend money unnecessary. My bling days r well n truly Over. Will have a read now. Cheers.
Could tyres have something to do with it? Ever since my Pantah developed a death wobble in the 80s with brand new supposedly designed to fit Pirellis SuperTourings (or whatever they were supposed to be), I tend to blame tyres. Put different tyres back on and problem sorted. Maybe even different pressures would make a big difference.
Yep. Lots of Variables. Adjust one thing at a time. I'm lucky as I have a bend which I know aggravates The issue. Just need it to stop Raining!!
