After experiencing some gurgling and popping during downshifting etc I suddenly had a large backfire and the bike became noticeably louder. Upon inspection I noticed a spring missing from the vertical cylinder link pipe and one of the manifold exhaust studs loose. Upon further inspection I find a hole in the exhaust. could this have simply been caused by the manifold nut being loose and the spring missing or something more to worry about?
Is this part of the exhaust known as the header? Will an 1198 header fit? I have had a quick google and it appears an 848 will not fit. Is that correct? The bike has only been out twice after sitting for 7 months in the garage. I replaced the battery and spark plugs and it was running fine until Friday nights backfire. I have no warnings on the dash. Maybe the spring had been missing for a while or possibly since I bought the bike 36 months ago, could the vibration have caused the hole in the exhaust as its right where it mounts to the frame. Obviously I need a new system now but could there be any underlying issues as to why this has happened? Thanks Phil
Had the same thing happen on my 748 track bike, rather than buying new exhaust as it was a track bike I cut up a bean tin, wrapped it around the exhaust then put a couple of jubilee clips round it, worked an absolute treat and cost nothing.
Sorry for taking the piss Timberwolf that dont look good, i think i have got the right pipes sounds like the price has gone up!LOL not really still the same price
LOL thanks mate. I just need some confirmation from the techy guys on here that they will fit a 1098 and then we can sort it out please. I will get back to you tomorrow mate.
No it's not the header, they're the short bits that are fixed to the cylinders, 1198 ones are different but you don't need them anyway. With the spring missing there could have been flexing at the fixing point which has weakened it and allowed it to blow out certainly not the end of the world though and any half decent zorst place should be able to weld that up no problem.
Yep. Any 848 / 1098 mid pipes will do. Or if you know anyone at a fabrication shop, they could patch it up for a few quid. By looking at the photo, that's what I'd do. They could reinforce the mounting bracket at the same time. Shouldn't cost more that a tenner.
Thanks Bomaris. Tobytyke and Bettes are kindly advising me they won't fit. I am not sure of the differences between the 848/1098/1198 pipes. When I google searched it seemed the 848 ones would not fit. You guys reckon that would weld up, even though there is a piece missing?
That can easily be patched up. Just pop in to any fabrication shop. If you can't find one locally, send me a pm. Ian
Just spoke to Ducati to check stock on a replacement spring 799.1.263.2A and a vibration damper 76.1.024.1A and asked about fitment on the central exhaust pipe. He tells me the later 848 and the 1098/1198 are the same. I will remove it I think and have a weigh up about repairing it or replacing it. Anyone know who may have the parts above in stock as ducati dealers don't seem to stock them. Was hoping to get it back together one way or another for weekend. Bomaris, can I come back to you re the exhaust. If you sell it in the meantime thats fair enough my friend.
Am I likely to need some heat to get the central exhaust off? Anyone done it? Its not a pig of a job is it, remove swing arm etc etc? I have a rubber mallet but feel it won't be that simple and probably bite me in the ass.
Should be ok just loosening the end cans, remove them or just pull them back out of the way. Remove r/h rear set, bolt to frame and exhaust valve/ flapper if still fitted. Don't know if you have a lambda sensor on yours. If so, just unplug it. You should be able to wriggle the mid pipe section off then. Just the reverse for fitting. Might have missed something but in general a half hour jobby.
Managed to get the exhaust off last night. It was quite a simple job as you said bettes, thanks. The only issue I had was the cables for the butterfly valve. I managed to get the top one off easy enough but the bottom one had to come off once I had loosened the exhaust and by sliding the broken mount off. Is there an easier way as I will not be able to put it back on the same way I removed it once it has been welded.
Hi mate. Glad it went well. Once one of the cables is loose, the other should come off ok. Can't remember which one comes off first. Why not eliminate the whole job now it's off? It' just junk anyway. All you need is a simple reflash that oneof the forum members can do for you. In fact now you have the pipes off, you might as well get the valve cut out and a blanking plate welded in. Ian
Thanks Ian! I managed to get the top cable off but the bottom one was difficult. I wondered if the cables had a join somewhere. I will have to look into this tonight by removing the right hand fairing. I have already had the exhaust welded this morning so I am just going to put it back on as it came off but thanks for your assistance mate.
No worries. IIRC you can just spin the nut in the centre of the valve with a spanner to get some slack in the cable.
