1098 Ignition Key Cover - Carbon Replacement

  1. Hi folks,

Have just bagged myself a carbon key cover thingy.

Taking the OEM one off, I noted the transponder loop and have removed it, but the cover still has a ‘ring’ of slightly flexible material onto which the transponder mounts.

Trouble is I can’t figure out how to remove it to be attached to the carbon jobby.

    Any ideas?

Do I leave it and just position the transponder ring around the ignition barrel?

    TIA
    BJB

  2. I imagine it would just pull off. The antenna needs to be as near to the key as possible so just sitting it around the ignorant barrel might not work. You could glue the antenna into the new cover with a silicon adhesive. I have heard though of people having issues with carbon covers preventing the antenna communicating with key. I think it will be a case of trying it and seeing.

  3. Whether it is true, I don’t know but there is a commonly held belief by some that carbon fibre attenuates the signal between the key and antenna. I think @Derek ‘s advice is sound. Andy

  4. Rather thank trying to glue or stick the antenna to the cover, you can use a cable tie around the lock barrel to hold the antenna as high as possible, then sit the cover over the lock.
You do need to keep the antenna as high as possible. Some of the covers have a high resin build up where the antenna should sit and that cause problems. As Derek mentions, I’ve come across issues with carbon appearing to mask the transponder signal…. Or it’s been simply the antenna ring can’t be positioned high enough

  5. Thanks folks.
The ‘rubberised’ bit in the OEM part won’t shift without being damaged so have left it. Have positioned antenna without any fixings for now and it’s AOK.
I shall attempt something more permanent tomorrow.
    Thanks again!

  6. As the guys have already said, it is really important for the immo antenna to be as near the key transponder as possible. If not you are leaving yourself open to being stranded with the immo not being able to read the key. This will most likely manifest itself during a downpour or after washing the bike. Derek’s suggestion to use silicone adhesive to fix the antenna as high as possible inside the shroud is probably the best advice. You can also improve things by removing the shroud mounting posts from the ignition and putting a couple of washers under each post. This will raise the immo antenna/shroud a couple of mm nearer the key transponder. If you decide to not do this then make sure you have the immo bypass code with you. Either on the code card or saved elsewhere, because you will need it.
