1098 1098 Squeeling Clutch

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Garcharles, Aug 7, 2019.

  1. Hi, I have a 1098 with a squeeling clutch, any ideas what it might be and how to fix please.

  2. In order of ease/cost:
    Clean the plates and basket
Check stack height and adjust with steel plates of different thickness
check for notches in the hub and basket
    Replace the clutch pack
    Replace the basket and hub

  3. Does it squeal as you take up the drive or as long as you have the lever pulled in??

  4. Has I take up the drive, its fine once moving.

  5. Ear plugs would be cheapest solution

  6. White lithium grease will cure the noise and make it smoother as well.

  7. You could put another dished steel plate in the clutch, this is how I've cured a couple of them now. Plus it's less 'graunchy' when pulling away with a smoother take up.

  8. What would I grease with the lithium grease?

  9. Smear grease on all the friction surfaces, wipe off excess, bake in oven at 200c until smoke clears. Job done
