1098 wont start

  1. Some help needed here lads and lassies....
My bike has been parked up for about a month and only on trickle charge once a week due to work in progress in house and power in garage disconnected ,garage some distance from house.

Anyhow , it cranks over but wont start, thinking its a battery prob I disconnected battery and charged on battery charger and refitted and was reading 12.7v on dash .. Thats about right yea ?
Still cranks but wont fire up:frown:
Then I found.. Error code on dash INJE13.2 and INJE 12.2
    Maybe relay prob?
Hoping its a corrosion issue and quick fix, wud this be right??

Question is, where is the poxy relay??
Even when battery reads 12.7 v, could it still be foooked as I know these bikes need a strong battery to start up?

Would greatly appreciate it anyone has time to post some pics if poss of relay or other potential faults to look at:upyeah:

  2. The relays are tucked away to the right of the battery.

Have you pulled a spark plug to see if there's a spark?
    Side stand down?
Can you hear the fuel pump prime?
If the batt is turning the bike over then it aint the battery.

  3. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think those error codes are indicative of the relay not working. Dunno about a 1098,but that's the codes thrown up on a 749 when the relay isn't clicking in, resulting in no power to pump and injectors. If it is this your laughing as it's the easiest fault to cure.

  4. Just checked my w'shop manual and John is correct, injector faults.
    Start with the relay.
The the head light one is the same IIRC. So, play swaps...:upyeah:

  5. Injectors shorted to earth apparently - hopefully will be faulty fuel relay although an ECU fault could produce similar results.

  6. Have done nothing yet, literally just checked it with charged battery.
    Side stand up.
With key turned on , no sound, yikes
    Key off, whirring sound..
I take it fuel pump should prime with on position??

  7. Yep, pump should prime with key in On position. Sounds to me like the relay is stuck in the latched on position. Try what Nelson suggested and do a temporary swap with the headlight relay to test.

  8. Cheers for that :upyeah:
    Last q hopefully lol
    Where is the relay exactly?
    Do I remove battery box?

  9. From Chris's post:

on the right side of the battery compartment you will see a coolant hose running vertically. Behind that are two relays (small black boxes) attached to the side of the battery box and terminating two clumps of wiring from the main ECU harness. You need to remove the battery and release the battery box from the frame to get best access. Once the battery box is loose, swing it out and down and then pull the relays with a set of long nose pliers to inspect/clean.

  10. Nope, IIRC the loom runs down the right of the batt box. The relays are tucked away behind that.

  11. Got that thanks:upyeah:
    Fingers crossed thats the prob..
Will let you know how I get on..
    Thanks All:upyeah:

Relay is the black block to the left of the bat box on above pic.:upyeah:

  13. Nelson Can one do any modifications to the existing relay home so as they live in a new place more easily accessible?

  14. I've not tried, sounds like a good idea though!
ChrisW may have, he likes a good electrical fiddle...:upyeah:

  15. Okay, located relays and swapped them over, fuel pump primed and bike fired right up:smile:
Then cleaned them up, did,nt look too bad tbh, swapped them back and no joy, wont start...
    So problem located..

So, is there any tips to properly clean them or should I buy some new ones on ebay, think they,re quiet cheap...??

    Thanks again for your help:upyeah:

  16. I think mine cost £1.99 from e bay. New style 'sealed' relays from Ducati dealers about £5 iirc.

The contacts of the relays are dealing with relatively high surge currents so it is not surprising they break down!
