1098 1098s 2007 Known Issues? First Time Buy

  1. Hi Guys,

*Admins may delete this if this is a repeat of previous posts*

I've got my eye fixed on a 1098s from 2007 with a Dynojet PC and Term Ex. Its reached 15000 km on the clock and 's got it service fullfilled.
I have searched on various forums that both talk well and bad about the bike. But what do you boys say to it? Can it be recommended and what childhood diseases / maladies should you be aware of?

Also, I tested one yesterday for half an hour. While driving, it managed to go out 4 times. Turn off the engine, shut off. Mostly it was at the red traffic lights. But also when I gave it a quick twist on the throttle in Neutral, to get some sound.
Is this normal? The dealer says it's pretty normal for superbikes to do that.

    Thank you in advance,
    /Michael

  2. Main bearing noises
    Cracked pistons

  3. Shite gearbox so don't fit a quick shifter. Save a bit more and buy an 1198s

  4. Welcome Michael - as above - try and get an 1198 :):upyeah:

  5. Thank you. But the 1198 is not an option since I'm considering the 1098.

  6. The 1198 had improved / stronger main crank bearings. I’m only providing advice :):upyeah:and it's generally known as the last proper Ducati - the depreciation has stopped and started climbing too.

  7. Had my 2007 1098s with full Termis for 5yrs now. Currently 17000 miles on it. Dealer serviced regularly & runs sweet & reliable. Does occasionally cut out or splutter for a second when it’s running hot & idling, apparently it’s a “thing” but you get used to it. Wonderful bike & unless I suddenly inherit enough money to buy a Desmo, it’s going nowhere.

  8. I have a 1098s purchased new in 2007. Fantastic bike approaching 60k. Posted a thread couple of years ago when I discovered the bottom skirt of piston had fell off discovering bits during oil change. To be honest bike was still running fine. Apart from that nothing much else and she’s been a great bike and keeper.

  9. I’d say they’re great bikes. My mate had one and trashed the tits off it for the best part of its life. No problems at all that I can remember.
A bit different but I owned a 1098R for years and yeah, pistons were a bit chocolate. Finally bit the bullet and had HC Pistals fitted. Sold it to @ditchvisitor :):upyeah:

  10. Did someone say my name??

I previously owned a 1098S with Termis and it had a penchant for randomly cutting out at idle when hot. As the other guys have said bearing rings and fork seals.

  11. Hmmm, you see... a custom remap would have dialled out any cut outery. Maybe :bucktooth:

  12. I know of many with 749 and 999s that had the cutting out problem but I can say I’ve never experienced this problem on my 1098 and have ridden with many guys on 1098 both standard and R versions that never cut out. Probably tempting fate.

  13. Mine does do that occasionally as I said earlier but it’s a minor issue & it’s never caused me a problem. Interesting that a remap might help. I might look into that. I know it was remapped when the Termis went on but that was before I bought it so might be worth a trip to JHP once they’re open again
