1098s Not Starting And Misfiring :(

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Tom Bukin, Nov 11, 2018.

  1. Hi, hoping for a bit of help and advice please. I have a 1098s, owned for about 2 1/2 years, and up until a month ago it ran and performed perfectly. Since having a big service 6 weeks ago I have been experiencing various issues, the main one being not being able to start the bike on two separate occasions, with it sounding like it is misfiring badly, then after a period of trying to turn over it not starting at all.

Other thing to note, since returning from service the Ducati Power shift wasn’t functioning like it was before, delay in shift and being able to accelerate (split second but noticeable). The company that serviced the bike hasn’t left me with much confidence after these issues along with missing fairing bolts, reservoir covers and a overflow pipe left on exhaust header that needless to say burnt through! Wouldn’t believe it was a specialist and came with high recommendation.

All I am hoping for is a bit of advice as if anyone has experienced similar so I can check myself, as the service cost me a fair sum! I’m not sure if the best thing to do would be to post a video, if possible on here?

    Thanks All.

  2. Battery.

It may not have enough power to run the starter circuit and fire the coils at the same time, hence flooding. I had the same issue on my 1098R.

Try a different battery and see what you get. A set of @Exige 's starter leads help the job along too. Don't be tempted to keep turning it over if you are getting nowhere, you could kill the sprag. I speak from experience. :(

  3. Oh, I did keep turning over for a while today!! If I kill the sprag, what is that likely to set me back? :worried:

Thought the battery was fine tbh as always on trickle and shows 12v+ on dash. It did this before, but then started and ran fine on another occasion in between (good 150 mile session with several stops).

    Thanks

  4. when you say big service what exactly did they say or list what they have done... are we talking belts, valve clearances, as well as filters, oil, etc.

If you can say what they have touched it may give some direction on what to look for especially if it was running ok before the "service"

  5. Hi, yes belts, one valve clearance checked (easy to get to one), fluids to. The bike has full termi 70mm system and Ecu upgraded (not power commander) and Ducati power shift.

  6. Sprag......£300+ fitted. :(

  7. Give the Service Agent an opportunity to put it right first, talk to the owner/manager and express your concerns and problems, then see if they are willing/can rectify the issues, the measure of a good company is not just their level of service and professionalism, but how they deal with problems such as this, a gentle suggestion that the results will be published on this forum may be a motivating factor for them to do the right thing.

  10. As Dave said id say battery too....12+ isnt enough for cranking voltage really....it should be touching 13 at least (checking mine the other day mine was 13.2v) i think the general rule of thumb is if it drops below 12 its knackered...

  11. Yes did try this already, but he seemed to be making excuses, and in all honestly I wouldn’t want my bike back in there. Rather pay someone else to sort it or do it myself if I can. :triumph:

  12. He did tell me he was only going to check the one while he could get to it, as they weren’t due. That said, I don’t honestly know what he has done to a good standard. So pissed as he came on recommendation and has 17 of his own Ducati’s!

  13. I sense that a reveal of the service provider's identity is imminent.

  14. Is @Exige doing services now?

  15. You need an offset pin and a later 1198, 848 Corse alt cover. The later bikes have a longer pin supported by the alt cover. The earlier cases esp. R ones are not compatible with the later cover, as the pin position is in a different position to the later cases.

These stop in intermediate gear pin from elongating the hole in the crank case, that the pin goes into.

Due to the unsupported end of the pin and the force put onto the gear.
