I've just bought a 1098S with about 7.5k on the clock. The bike is cosmetically very clean but had been stood for about 18months, so as soon as I got it I sent it to my local dealer to have the works. New belts, valve check, fluids, plugs, chain & sprocket etc etc. Also the slipper clutch was on its last legs so I bought a second hand DP slipper clutch on line. My dealers comments about it were 'it's not brilliant but it's ok and should last a good few thousand miles of average riding'. So this brings me to my question. I took the bike out for the first time last night and it was great, I owned a base model 1098 a few years ago before swapping it for an 1199. I have to say it was great to be back on a 1098 again, I'd forgotten how exciting they were, a bit grumbly down the bottom end but loads of mid range. A more challenging bike to ride I think but very rewarding. Anyway back to the query. When I got home after a ride of about 20 ish miles I noticed the clutch (open) was extremely hot. There was no smell, discolouring of the pressure plate or anything to alarm me about it other than the open metal clutch cover was too hot to touch. I had an open clutch on my previous base 1098 a few years ago but can't recall it ever getting so hot, but then I can't really recall ever trying to touch it either. Am I just been paranoid and is this normal? Thanks. Jason.
Consider the average water temperature in the radiator and then add 10 to 15 degrees more for the oil. This will be a similar temperature to the cases which will of course transfer to the clutch say 90° C, so yes in the realms of I wouldn't want to touch that with a bare hand. Discolouration would be the clue that something might be wrong so it sounds pretty normal. Andy
