Manual specifies 10w 40 oil to be used but have read few threads on the Web that 10w 50 should be used instead..... Any thoughts??
Interesting. The last stuff I bought was Motul 300V, 10-40. When I picked up my bike from MR at the weekend they flogged me Motul 300V 10-50. As you say it aint cheap. What's the difference?
Cheers, thought so. Couldn't be arsed looking it up. But I would have thought 10-50 was middle east spec? Its the only place I've been touching 50 deg. Oh, and Niger but not much motorsport going on there...
My 916 is off the road as it has done in its valve stem seals and valve guides on the rear pot which runs very hot. I was told that the 10W40 300V I was using was not up to the job on a 916 and may well have been contributory to the failure and I needed to use 10W50 or 15W50 300V. The heads are hopefully going away next week to get sorted so would like to see the consensus on this question.
^^^ That is one theory that has been bandied about for a while now. Personally I would say there is an element of truth, if no more, in it.
the ducati workshops i know all use 15/50 fully synth in big engined bikes some of smaller air-cooled engines (803cc down) are happier running 10/40 semi synth for general use. but if the bike is ridden very hard then 15/50 is still recommended for these smaller engined
