1198 Surging Idle When Warm

  1. Hi all,

New to the site. I've searched this elsewhere and have seen similar issues described but not what I'm experiencing. I have a 2011 1198 which has developed an idling issue once it's warmed up. Idles and ticks along fine when cold, but once it's been up to temperature for a 5-10 minutes, and the fans have cycled a few times, it starts to surge and the idle jumps up and starts bouncing between 2500-3500. If I try to blip the throttle, it goes up the rev range, but it doesn't build the revs smoothly. If I force and hold the throttle shut, the idle drops back to normal, even though there's no noticeable movement on the throttle. If I turn it off and start it again, issue is still there. If I leave it off for a few hours to cool down and then start it, it's fine until it's warm again. When I was riding the bike and it happened it would struggle to accelerate and stall.

Voltage seems to be fine while it's surging, around 14v. I thought it may be the TPS, so replaced and recalibrated that, didn't pick up that the issue was only occurring when the bike was warm. It came with Termignoni exhausts, but I don't know if the ECU/map was updated to suit. I tried spraying the throttle body with carb cleaner (read on a similar thread this could help).

Have read elsewhere that it could be the fuel filter or ignition coil, but haven't gotten round to checking those yet.

Just wanted to know what else to try before I start striping the bike down to identify the issue.

    Any help/advice is much appreciated.

  2. The ICV could be the issue. If you are lucky it may respond to being flushed out with Carb cleaner.

  3. Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply. Will add the ICV to the list of things to check.
