Out of the above - what are the pros and cons of using either for an oil change? At the moment, it looks like the Shell is around 50% of the price of the Motul (£23 vs £46) yet Shell is filled from the factory. Both are the same weight so should really do the same job. Why would you use the Motul 300V? My local dealer say that the only reason they use it is due to it being linked to their supplier. No doubt other dealers are similar. Matt
Imho, Motul 7100 and you can get a forum discount from Opie oils. 300 v is expensive because it's a racing oil. 7100 is their full spec fully synthetic road bike oil and has additives for longevity and corrosion resistance etc accordingly.
300v is a double ester synthetic which is supposed to cling to surfaces even after standing so theoretically your critical metal to metal interfaces always have lubrication even from cold. That is as I understand it. I use 300v in my 1098R and 7100 in my Multistrada. Andy
I use 7100 as my regular service oil, but put 300V in Pani's. Reason..... Pani uses plain mains, gets hot and 300V is the most stable oil I've seen at high temps. Way back, when I used Shell in DD16RR we had a few instances of oil pressure lights flickering when hot (>90 degrees). Switched them over to 300V and it stopped. Same grades, 15W/50 but not all oils are created equal
As someone sad enough to read oil studies, Motul do seem to come out at or near the top in all critical aspects, hence why I use the stuff.
Shell paid for the sticker to be by the oil filler. The same as with my old bmw but I can't remember what brand by their fillers. I use Motul 300V in my multi-enduro personally.
That's sold it for me! Thanks for all the other replies - it looks like there's a lot of love for the motul but not so much for the Shell. Don't get me wrong, I'm gonna use the Motul though. I assume 15w50 as it will be on track at least once before resuming road duties again?
300v is race oil and needs to be changed a lot. 7100 to be honest will be the best for road and the odd trackday. But eitherway motul over the shell
I use Motul 300V in all the bikes now. I used to just use anything and make sure I changed it every trackday or two but even after a couple of hard days on track normal oil would be very watery whereas the Motul 300V looks just the same as when it went in. Ideal for Euro days where you are on track for three days.
