1199 Pani Base forks on a 749?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by pingping010101, Jan 20, 2014.

  1. Would anybody be able to let me know the upper diameters on a 1199 base model fork? I've found a lovely cheap pair, almost new, and I'm wondering if it would an easy fit?

ANSWER: No. 57mm top, 58mm lower (Maybe.) Widetrack top yoke would be needed to match lower.

  2. This would be an interesting mod. Im liking your thinking but I'm going to guess that you'll be machining yokes soon

  3. I'm gonna put it out there and say u will be needing new yokes; the spec says they are 50mm forks which I believe is the stanchion!

  4. It would be, but I've gone for a set of 1098 Showas that I managed to pick up for £340 including lower triple and delivery.

Will still be machining yokes. The 1199 forks were in the USA and I don't need to be causing problems at home with customs charges etc. Here is the link though if someone else would like to have a go.

Would still be good to get an answer for future reference in case this comes up in a google search. I find it so frustrating when I think I have googled an answer and find a thread devoid of any actual information.

  5. What you actually building Tom?

  6. A monster. ;)

I've got a perfectly good 749S with no problems, and I'm going to make it my own.

There aren't actually that many big changes. I want to have newer mono block brakes so I need radial mounts on the forks. The only way to get those was to buy 749R ohlins or newer forks with 100mm mounts. So I've got some new forks and some nice brembo rcs cylinders to go with them.

I wanted to fit a digital dash but it was looking like I would need a motech ECU and Digitek Dash to get that. Which would have cost a fortune. The 749 dash is actually alright, I just wanted to go for something different.

The engine in the bike has reasonably high mileage (26k) and is 10 years old, so I can decide later on whether to re-build the original or to put a bigger, newer lump in there. The 848 Dash and 1098 loom will be useful then too.

The bike is going to be stripped, the frame and wheels painted, the bearings all replaced. I have a 749 black type swing arm to go on.
I've got some gilles rear sets, a DP slipper clutch and a few carbon bits and pieces.

Essentially its going to be a 749S with a new type swing arm, a few newer bits like brakes and suspension and a strip and re-build with a custom map to make everything run ticketey boo.

  7. Sounds interesting...:upyeah:
I think I'd be leaving the dash/loom/ecu gubbins until I was ready for a new lump.
The 749 dash is actually quite nice.

  8. You never know, I'm away for a long time and there's nothing to stop a well priced 848/1098 lump suddenly turning up at the MADASL workshops in the back of a van.

I'm sure he is sick of this stuff by now but he never lets on.

I could have bought an 848 or 1098 for the budget, but I prefer the look of the 749/999 and I want something special.

  9. Pani yokes are widetrack, so wont mate up with the top yoke from a 749
