1199 1199r Clutch Failure

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Karl G, Aug 21, 2017.

  1. Hi everyone. My panigale 1199r has developed a clutch fault. When you pull the clutch lever in there is absolutely no resistance and when I've tried to bleed the system the fluid isn't pumping through. I've had a mate pop over and try to bleed it also but to no avail. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  2. Is the slave cylinder leaking? It most be one of the two at a guess

  3. Hi. I've had the slave cover
Hi, I'm not much of a mechanic so how do I check to see if that's the problem? Thanks

  4. You could fake it off and pull the lever very very slightly and see if it moves, check there's no leaks first

I'd be surprised if it wasn't a hydraulic problem

  5. Okay, thank you. I'll give it a go. Cheers

  6. What year is your 1199R?
    13/14
    or
    15/16/17?
The later models used a similar clutch to the 1199 SuperLeggera. A recall was done on the 1199SL in 2016. I think it was the springs behind the slipper clutch itself and a number of US owners complained of other clutch issues.

  7. Hi. It's a 2013 model, it's just covered 2600 miles and only had road use.

  8. Is the fluid low in the clutch fluid pot, if it is that will indicate a leak somewhere or depending on what fluid they put in it may be reaching boiling point and evaporating ?
My first guess would be leaky slave.

  9. IME, for there to be no fluid movement at the slave cylinder bleed nipple, there are 2 possibilities that spring to mind. Air in the master cylinder so you need to bleed it (it has its own bleed nipple) or the master cylinder seals have given up. Andy

  10. Hi, yes I've tried to bleed the master cylinder through its own bleed nipple. No fluid is being pushed through at all even when the bleed nipple has been completely removed! Can you repair this problem with new seals or do I need to purchase a new unit?

  11. The clutch master cylinder is serviceable by a Brembo specialist (someone like Bike Torque Racing) but they usually have to send it away so it can take a fair bit of time to get back. Not a cheap item to buy new but are available second hand although you run a small risk of getting one that is no better. Andy

  12. .
Also I've just removed the push rod from the slave cylinder and it's wet through with clutch fluid. Is this normal?

  14. Most likely to be the cheap OEM Brembo master. I am on my second one, the first admitting air all the time and never getting a good solid lever feel. The second one is much better but still not perfect.

  15. No that is not normal. Having to replace the slave cylinder is not unusual and something like an Oberon at about £80 is a better option than the OE. Andy

  16. Thank you. I'll order an an oberon slave and hope it does the trick.

  17. Are you sure it was clutch fluid? I had mine apart recently. It has lost no fluid at all. The push rod was covered in engine oil (as expected) when I retrieved it.

  18. Before you order the slave take the existing one off it's only 3 bolts you can then check the O ring if there is fluid there it's definitely leaking
I think there is a distinct colour difference between the two.

  19. I'm looking to replace the seals in the clutch master cylinder. Can is purchase a seal kit or do I have to buy a new unit?

  20. I am pretty sure there is a kit that can be purchased from Brembo.
