1200 R Gearing Change ???

Discussion in 'Monster' started by Wazzaduke33, May 29, 2021.

  1. Hi guys

Recently purchased a 1200 R, gearing is standard and I feel as though it’s too tall. I want to change it to 14/43, I’m hearing that this cannot be done as it fouls the swingarm (due to the 14T primarily)

Has anyone actually done this and can provide real world feedback ?

  2. 14/43! That's a lot of gearing equivalent to adding 5T to the rear.
Are you sure you want that much?
I have 15/43 now (+2R) and love it.

  3. GearingCommander is a good site.
I made a quick reference sheet relative to stock.

The 0~60 changes may not be realistic.

  4. Thanks guys, I’ve ordered a 43T rear, I’m assuming then these are no issues with OEM chain / swingarm clearance going 14/43 ?

  5. Going only to a 14T front will permit you to use the OEM chain.
15/43 will require a new chain.
14/43 may also require a new chain. Don't quote me.
I don't know anyone who has leveraged that much. You're in Terra Incognita.
However, If you're changing the sprockets, you should also change the chain IMHO.

  6. Thanks mate, I think it will absolutely stonking with 14/43, I’ve done -1 / +2 on my Superduke 1290 and it’s perfect on the road, insane acceleration

  7. I don't doubt it. It's going to be quite the wheelie Monster.

  8. As the 1200R has no wheelie control ,it might feel faster ,but i don't think you will keep the front down on hard acceleration ,so ultimately it will be slower .

  9. Yup Absolutely. The Monster 1200R pulls like a train but will not out drag my 959 Panigale.
The Monsters just don't have the wheelbase and forward weight to keep it planted.
Wheelie Control doesn't help either as it just cuts the throttle.
    It's a Wheelie Monster not a dragster.
