1299 1299 S Desmo Service

  1. My 1299S is due its Desmo service currently sitting at 14400miles.

I contacted my local Ducati Dealer Ducati Glasgow who quoted me £1100 but would do it for £900 (winter prices) seemed reasonable.

I was then quoted £1500 by another Ducati Dealer down south.

And then Quoted £750 by Ducati lincolnshire.

Now I wasn't actually planning on phoning different Ducati dealers for prices but I was in this Ducati dealer down south and decided to ask them out of interest to compare with Ducati Glasgow.

I was shocked by £1500 what a difference in price so then I phoned Ducati Lincolnshire who then bet Ducati Glasgow price and came in at £750 for full Desmo service.

My question is why are these all different prices I would assume all be the same.

Im a bit gutted to be honest as I will probably go to Ducati Lincolnshire and use them as I work down that way and can transport the bike at no cost which would take the business away from my local dealer but im saving £150 loyalty isn't cheap lol

  2. £750 you can live with But those other prices are atrocious, Hate to think what the cost of the Desmo v4 is

  3. Use Nelly at Cornerspeed if you're willing to travel.

  4. That doesn’t make sense, on their website or via google the desmo service is meant to be a set price.

    Wait I’ll go find it.

So going by that it should be roughly £677.

It also states that they’ll never charge more even if it takes longer than the book states.

So that includes oil service and desmo service.

  6. Italia Moto are excellent and a great bunch of guy there. Luckily for me they're only about 40 minutes from us too...

If you use them I'm sure you won't be disappointed with the service you receive.

  7. You will get a varience on labour rates which depends on local business rates and salaries. I’ve seen labour rates as low as £50/h up to over £80/h. So on a potential 6 to 8 hour job, there’s up to £240 straight away. I do wonder on what work or anticipated work you have been quoted. If you need shims replacing I can see the total job costing £1200 or £1400 however £750 sounds like a basic desmo check without shims. Sadly nothing new. Andy

  8. The guys at Ducati Glasgow are a good team too and would actually be disappointed to not use them but like you all say £750 is a no brainer.

Cost is number 1 as long as the dealer is Ducati and has a good reputation so looks like I will use Ducati Lincoln.

  9. You should query them over the prices above that I posted, that’s taken from their own website.

  10. @Wull Im not sure that includes the full Desmo as Desmo includes all fluids changed and spark plugs changed aswell as valve clearances.

  11. Annual plus a valves isn’t a “full” desmo. There’s plugs, air filter, chassis ops, fluids etc. to factor in as well. These would be covered by “age and mileage operations” I guess. Flat time on the job is about 10 hours, so labour rates will have a big effect on the end cost.
Winter labour rates are running out now, so it’s a good time to get in if the dealer is still doing them.
You won’t go wrong with either Glasgow or Lincoln.

  12. Fluids aren’t required until the 22,500 service.

The 15,000 miles service listed above is the oils service plus desmo service. Not sure about plugs etc but it states the valve clearances are checked and changed if needed but doesn’t cover the cost of shims, that is extra. It also states if wearable items are required such as brake pads, filters and plugs then that is extra.

  13. Give me a buzz tomorrow and I’ll check the prices and see if there’s a way to ease the pain. No promises but at £1100, I might be able to help.

The Desmo service is like open heart surgery. All that’s left of the bench during the service is the engine in the chassis and swinging arm. Wheels, Forks, radiators, subframe and obviously all body work is stripped off to get into the valves, forks and brakes are stripped and cleaned, all fluids changed and much more. It’s heavily labour intensive, takes more than day but is super thorough and the bike will feel like new.

But, due to the time taken it can be a touch costly I’m afraid. It really depends on how your valve clearances are. If they don’t need done, we button her back up without removing the cams.

As I say, give me a buzz tomorrow and if there’s anything I can do, I’ll get on it.

  15. And that’s every 15,000 miles? What does the prices above refer to then?

  16. I don’t manage our website if I’m honest but I think the pricing page above is hidden on our site now as far as I’m aware (excuse me if I’ve got that wrong) It looks like old prices that we are currently updating so I’m sorry if that’s souring the milk here.

The age and mileage related operations vary dramtically with use so the cost is on quite a sliding scale. But the full belt and braces Desmo service with all the trimmings is pretty much as I described. The time is really taken whilst getting into the valves as subframe and radiators need removed for access.

Many manufacturers don’t recommend everything that should really be done so they can advertise cheaper running costs. Ducati pretty much show the full lot that could be possible but often we don’t have to go that far. But things like fork oil should be changed every 3 years to keep it optimum, suspension is such a huge part of how a bike handles never mind from a safety point of view.

We can taylor make the service tho, perhaps do things like forks at a different time to spread the cost but I’d need to view the whole history to make a determination on that.

I’m sat on the couch at home so difficult to see prices and such from here. :)
