1995 monster 600

  1. Hello all, have been out enjoying re-learning the rope on my beloved m600.

Have discovered a potentially worrying problem that has only started today. When first started this morning, she idled ok in neutral then without prompting decided to engage a gear. Then whilst on the move, cruising in 5th gear, she would disengage the gear. Also gear changes have become distinctly more clunky (not all of the time though).

Clutch fluid level looks ok and she had an oil change a few hundred miles ago (K&N filter and silkolene oil - as recommended by opie oils).

Any thoughts - please bear in mind my technical expertise ended with lego!!!

    Cheers all

  2. I don't imagine for one minute that engine oil change, clutch fluid and a K&N filter will have had anything to do with your problem....

..........however, even though I have had s*d all experience of a Ducati gearbox, with what you say, I reckon something like the gearbox drum control fork is playing up......maybe a broken spring.......possibly No.10 or No.15.

  3. So many possibilities here and it could well be down to distortion/damage to the gear selector shaft etc as AL says. If the gearlever offers good (springy) resistance when operating and is returning to the same position on both up and down changes then the 5th gear problem won't be down to either of the springs. The selecting first on it's own problem is fairly common though and could be caused by the selector arm being out of adjustment or even general wear to either this or the selector pawl. Always remember to select neutral via 1st rather than 2nd as this can reduce the chances of 'self-selection' happening. If you do know someone who could help you it's not too difficult a job to get to and set up or even replace part No 5 and 11* if necessary and the work is well documented in various manuals or on Forums. Worse scenario is if the gear selection dogs and/or gear sector drum are badly burred or worn but it's unlikely particularly as you say it's only just started.

    * fairly easily obtained s/hand in good condition
