The previous owner had fitted new clutch plates and he warned me that the clutch was sharp, and it really is! It’s also very hard to get neutral. Having done a search, I can see people talking about shims etc to adjust but I can’t find any detail on the process. Is there a good resource you can link me to, or can someone explain it to me like I’m an idiot? Ta.
It may be that your stack is a little to high. That makes for a grabby clutch with hard to find neutral. Too low and at the opposite, your clutch will slip under load, with very easy neutral. In your stack, you have friction plates and steel clutch plates. The latter come in two different thicknesses : 1.5 and 2.00 mm. Most of the times, you will have 2.00 mm plates in your clutch. Replacing one of these by a 1.5 mm plate will decrease your total stack height by 0.5 mm. By decreasing gradually 0.5 mm at a time, you will get to the perfect stack height where neutral is easily found even at a standstill without getting a slippery clutch.
Awesome, many thanks to you both! Next question: are the steel clutch rings available separately and, if so, where can I get them from? I’m struggling to find anything other than complete clutch packs.
Stein Dinse (Germany) have them: https://www.stein-dinse.com/en/item...N__5o40SqaqG_.XcvBcO__N5wuOnZOMZ88KN7qlZ.html So do Desmo Racing (France): https://www.desmo-racing.com/en/15mm-clutch-driven-plate-ducabike-for-ducati-xml-253_403-1986.html I would order a couple so that you are sure to be able to narrow down your ideal stack height.
