Hello all, 1st time here, as I used to use ducatisti forum before. I've booked my self on a track day with focused events @ Silverstone, as it will be my 1st ever track day experience, I wanted to ask you guy's and girl's for some tips and some do's and don'ts. Thanks in advance.
relax and enjoy it stick a bit of masking tape over your speedo as you wont need to look at that ask if there is an extra briefing for 1st timers, sometimes they give info on which gear to be in at tricky points which helps ask the tyre guy for tyre pressure info relax and enjoy it silverstone is huge, you will have a ball
Yep, as said above, just enjoy it. TBH, as long as you go around in the right direction you'll be fine. Listen to the novice briefing and maybe tag on to an instructor for a few laps. Other than that, make sure you bike's in good shape and you're fed and watered. Then grin like a idiot
Bananas Black electrical tape for mirrors and speedo Pair of trainers Jumper Water (lots) Ask tyre guy to setup tyres and don't forget to put pressures back to road Listen to the briefing Go slow and take your time, don't allow your self to be rushed by other riders Other riders will see you so don't worry who/what is behind you Focused events are really good! You are in safe hands Last tip, warm your tyres up with a couple of laps before cranking it over properly!
When are you going! I'm there 22nd April and 7th May, if your there any of those days let me know and we can hook up. Oh and don't forget you'll still need to breath.
+1 on all of the above, just relax, take your time, and don't feel like you've got to go quick. Speed doesn't equal enjoyment! I'll look for a Drinky sized hole in the tyre wall, I'm there on May 8th for a Caterham track day ;-)
Hi Drinky- yeah I'm going there on the 7th of May, yeah sure I'd like to meet up at the track. i'm going to be praying for good weather as it will be a Bank holiday then- and we all know what happens to the weather on a bank holiday! Thank you all for your tips and advice. p.s. Nutty nick, I'd love to see some pics and videos of your Catherham day- that will be next on the bucket list- to own a Catherham!
Bugz I'll pm you my mob number a bit nearer the day, if your going on your own your welcome to share a garage with us. You'll love Silverstone as a start point to the trackday addiction it's probably the best as its so big and wide there's always room. Are you riding there or trailer/van it?
I may pop up and see you on the 8th Nick, better still why not do the TD on the 7th you can stay a my place then do the Caterham day?
Dont forget both parts of your license and proper leathers, gloves and ACU helmet. Warm your tyres before leaning it over as said. Silverstone is awesome, I would like to do that one. Done the Stowe circuit a couple times though, thats OK.
I'll take some pics for you Bugz, and Drinky, I'll be there from about 0830 to 1700. I might ride the Baines up and drop into the workshop while I'm there as the cars are being supplied by Caterham. Give us a bell on the day if your about and I'll make sure you can get in.
Hi. just a follow up on this thread. Roughly how many litres of petrol do would one use on a track day? Is it wise to take a jerry can of 20L or is it not needed?
You will get through fuel quite quick, but, normally a petrol station, with inflated prices, on site. Just take some cash.
Roughly how much do they charge per L? Would a full bike tank AND 20L be enough or is it better to take 2 jerry cans- 40L?
To give you a rough idea of fuel used, on my 1098 I would expect to use 2 full tanks of fuel on a track day. roughly = 20 miles per session. 7 x sessions. 140 miles. At track day speeds a tank of fuel on my bike will do 65 - 70 miles until the light comes on.
Take it easy and you'll be fine. In my experience, it's Darwinism in action. The people who are going to bin it do so in the first few sessions. And immediately after lunch. In addition to what the guys have said here, take a big clock and learn what time your group is going out. That way you won't have to rush to get ready to go out - less stress, safer riding. Look where you're going, even if you think you're not going to make it, you might be surprised if you're looking to the exit. And if you're looking at the gravel, that's where you'll go.
My first track day I was nervous and excited. Listen to your briefing they will give you good advice and information on flags etc. Follow an instructor for lines to start with Drink plenty and have people around you to help out Lastly enjoy it's tiring too Have fun
