2000 996 Showa Fork Rebuild Puzzle

  1. I've just stripped and replaced the seals on one leg of my front forks (gold tube with red caps) and I'm now struggling to set/get the target rebound adjustment range. Before refitting the top cap I backed out the rebound adjuster fully and then wound it in 18 clicks (my target adjustment range as per bradthebikeboy youtube vid). I then compressed the spring with the special tool and span the top cap down on to the damper, with the locking nut wound right down to the bottom of its thread. I expected the top cap (+long thin rod) to bottom out before it touched the lock nut but it just kept on going until it touched the nut. I ended up with about 25 clicks of adjustment. I just can't get it to match the other leg, which I haven't stripped down yet, which has about 15 clicks of adjustment. I'm completely bamboozled. I'm sure everything went back in correctly. I didn't even remove the damper assembly.

    Any ideas? Ta.

  2. Did you back off the sag adjustment nut when you removed the top cap?

  3. Check the needle valve hasn’t fell out of the damper tube when you’ve been draining the oil. Unless it’s in there, the fork cap won’t be able to bottom out on the damper rod. There’s a spring in there to underneath the needle to.

  4. Thanks for the feedback. I don't think preload/sag will have any effect on what I'm seeing as I haven't released the spring yet.

  5. Thanks Nelly. Yes, it was still in place. I'm now thinking that I haven't wound down the lock nut far enough. I'll take another look tomorrow. I've got the second leg open now so will compare the measurements.

  6. I hadn't wound down the lock nut far enough. Now have 15 clicks of adjustment. Sorted.
