2001 748R Ohlins fork position

  1. Okay so now I'm panicing, the photos I posted of my 748R project have had a disturbingly common question raised about thow much of the fork leg is poking through the top yoke. The bike is on its way to Cartagena as I write this so there is nothing I can do about it unti l get to the track next Friday.
    What is the collective opinion for an optimum measurement ? I have read through a previous post for the 996 and most favour 5 rings instead of the standard 4 although I it doesn't differentiate between Showa and Ohlins. The Haynes gives a figure of 244mm measured from the top of the bottom yoke to the fork body top for a post 2000 748 but that's for Showa forks and not the 748R.
    From the uncompressed original photo I took it looks as though it's set at 6 or maybe 7 rings showing but I also have a set of 916 Factory Racing 30mm offset triple clamps fitted and the steering head is on the race angle (23.5 degrees).

    Can anyone HELP - pleeease ? Andy
     
  2. if you draw a line front to back of the bike at the angle of stance the bike is then that line can move up and down keeping the same stance of the bike

    So with the front that low presumably the back is also low…(but perhaps maintains the aspect of the bike..)

    if you go and look at the sec 8 stuff he goes the opposite way with no fork showing through the top but the back is also high in the area of 245-250 on the datum tool….raising the centre of gravity for a "quicker turn in"…his words not mine!

    the problem with your front being that low particularly with the 23.5 is that you are in danger of bottoming out the front…especially mid corner...

    plus 23.5 has just negated the extra 6mm of trail your expensive yokes had just provided…ducats always struggle for trail

    i don't see the purpose of 23.5 myself and if you look at more modern ducats they don't have it…..ironically going for 24 degrees mid way (this can be achieved with a different headstock insert….)

  4. I understand where you are coming from Andy but I've extended the wheel base by 19mm by fitting a supersport swing arm but hey ho, I'll take a look at the amount of compression. Thanks, Andy

  6. Whatever is comfortable is correct. Don't stress it. If you have any setting on the bike for a particular reason, that's good. Maybe not for someone else, but if it works for you, go with it.

    Experimentation, even at your age is healthy, so I'm told.

    by all means experiment………..be individual…….but you have to wonder why yours is so different from all the others and does or will it work…ask Ducati corse with the D16 and the fannygale
     
  8. if you find the (proper) 998RS manual….it shows you the settings they prescribe as a base setting…..
     
  9. My mistake, I should have written how much it compresses.

    I have a "proper" 748RS manual and it isn't that specific. If you could cut and paste the base settings you have in this post I much apprecaite it. Andy
     
  10. mine are 3 rings showing inside, 4 outside of yoke.
    I think IIRC the measurement from the top of the bottom yoke to the top of the fork is 244mm, taken from the manual/haynes.
    This puts the rings as above.
    These are std settings.

  14. Checked with MR today and they tell me they didn't change the settings I did so 244mm to the top of the fork from thr top of the lower clamp and standard rear ride height. I'm going to check when we meet the bikes on Fiday. Thanks for all the help guys. Andy
     
  15. ah worth the pain of this thread then….do you have a datum ride height tool for the rear….? well worth getting one for your trip…then you can record where you go with the settings..

  17. Too late Andy, I'm in Barcelona with hand luggage and the bike should almost be there. Had a brainwave and looked at some before and after photos in my album and yes there is a difference but only about 5 to 10 mm. Andy
     
  18. well how will he know whether its better if he doesn't know where he is starting or where he has altered to?
     
  19. Well, I'm making an assumption, but he's put a longer swinger and different offset yokes on for a reason, not just because he was bored.

    My point was that if it feels ok, he shouldn't be worrying. Just get on and ride the thing. If there's an issue, or if he feels the need to experiment, ok, do it. It's only at that point that you need a datum point so that you can return if you need to.
