bikes are fairly difficult to sell privately unless it's either rare, ultra desirable or very cheap (ie, the price is right). An offer can only be refused or accepted, so start low and be prepared to go up if it's a bike you really want.
I've been looking at 748s recently for some reason, although God knows why when I've already got two Ducatis. Despite the frankly stupid prices people often ask on eBay etc, bog standard BPs sell from around £2,250 upwards. Here's a screenshot of ones that have sold on eBay. Not everyone knows, but you can search for sold items only and it's a really good research tool when you're looking to buy or sell something.
I'm thinking of selling my 748 and buying a 1098S. Mine is in perfect condition, red 2002 BP/E with 11k. Just had £820 service.
This is the path on an iPhone Search > Refine > Show more > Sold items > Done You can also refine by category and distance if you need to. It will then show only the items for that search term which actually sold. It's not perfect for vehicles as many sales are finalised off eBay, but it gives you some info on what things actually sell for as opposed to what prices people ask
