2002 996 alternator nut has come off.......

  1. Oh dear.
I had a ride on it Sunday and it sounded a bit rough.
Wouldn't start at the petrol station - AA put the jump leads on and it was not charging.
Like an idiot tried to ride it the 10 miles home and of course the fuel pump needs 12 volts so it died after about 3 miles.
Got recovered and checked the stator continuity - one phase open circuit.
Got a used stator for decent money.

Take off the LHS crankcase cover and the stator screws have been pulled out of the cover, alternator nut has come off and rotor has some damage.

The crank moves up and down just a little bit if you grab hold and lift it up vertically.

Phoned Ducati Coventry and they are collecting the bike Monday to take a look.

Anyone have any commiserations or piss takes please carry on.

Oh and its my birthday today as well.

  2. better off not letting the wife see that t towel

  3. That's not good. :frown:

    Happy Birthday.

  4. Those scuffs are normal IIRC, as for the crank, bad news....

  5. I feel your hurt I had exactly the same problem the marks on the inside of your casing and rotor nut are exactly the same as mine, after repairing mine the sprag clutch and 1 of the gearings went :(, Its a very annoying thing to happen my casing comes of every service now to check said nut  thers a good chance the casing is fractured aswell my 1 just cracked at the weekend,I was a wee bit luckier my crank didnt have any movement

  6. If you have a full Ducati service history you should be offered a goodwill repair, parts will be covered but you'll have to pay for labour.

I say that as I was a victim to the same thing, it's a well documented issue and you can read up on this through many forums, you'll also notice that this nut is re-torqued at every service.

Ducati UK and John Hackett covered all of the work on mine also.

    Good luck!

  7. Same happened on mine (MY2000 748S) but I've done all the work myself.
New stator set, new side case as it wore out the groove for the circlip that keeps the bearing in place, new nut and the washer behind the flywheel. It's removed the timing marks from my flywheel as well - that's an easy/expensive way to get a lightened flywheel!
Crank was ok so think I'm lucky with this one.

  8. Main bearings went on my 999 and you could manually move the crank vertically.

  9. Sorry to hear of your troubles and happy birthday, hope the day improves. Was this self loosening stator nut problem sorted on the 998 testastrettas??

  10. You will be in to a big bill to repair that. I was in the same dilema a few weeks ago and had quotes from £1000 - £2000, your shagged engine does still have a value to someone. It will be cheaper to find a decent engine and just drop it in and sell whats left of yours.

  11. The answer to this is no, not properly ,all they did was upped the torque on the nut . Checked every time I do a service. You need the right flywheel holder to do this tho. Many a crank has snapped due to half baked ideas about holding it in different manners.

  12. I check mine every service aswell just to be on the safe side the last time I renewed the rotor nut I did so with locktite blue thread locker ;) and has been fine so far

  13. Not fixed on 998 stretta, mine went very rattle, then died. Lucky, only needed re-assembly, and a few "minor" bits, iirc. Was probably about £300 all in (couple of years ago, and memory is getting a little cloudy the further 40 gets away from me)

    Good luck,

    Pete
