2003 Multistrada 1000ds Ecu Issue

  1. I was looking for a monster but this cheap Multistrada appeared on my radars I bought it as a bit of a project. I did some research first and can see the the model has technical issues regarding ECUs failing.

So I gather the guy I bought it from bought the bike on Ebay as a non runner with faulty ECU being declared the problem. He bought a second hand ECU, keys and cocks and fitted them, and then realised the Display/clocks are tied into this whole can of worms and he gave up and put the bike up for sale and I bought it.

The bike is still sat in the back of my van, but I'm on the case...internet wise....

I'm wondering about firstly putting all the original stuff back as a starting point and checking the relays, I read they are often the issue. Going on what I've said so far, what would your first move be?

  2. If you send the ECUs to me I will see if I can connect to them on the bench. Will just cost you P&P.

  3. Thanks for the offer, I may well take you up on it! Actually your Ducati John popped up in a google search and are not far away from me. The bike is still on my van and I was wondering about bringing it to him and paying him to see if he can fettle it!

  4. Ducati John Cellier is a top bloke.

  5. The ECUs are coded, so trying to use a second-hand ECU will just mean that the immobiliser light comes on (and stays on) and you can't start the bike. Chris will be able to fix that for you :)

However, a common problem is that bikes will be jump started after a long lay-up or a winter in the shed, and it's very easy to put the leads on the wrong way round (or fit the battery the wrong way round) and it kills the starter circuit inside the ECU. If that's the case then you'll need to get the ECU repaired or try to get another second-hand ECU and get Chris to remove the immobiliser function and reflash it to the right software. Some of the MS1000 used the rare "5AM/HW103" ECU which are quite hard to find. I've tried some the later "5AM/HW610" ECU with different software but you get problems with the dash not working right for some functions. They can be a real pain to get working right!

  6. I guess something like that happened to the former keeper and he gave up. The bike is at Ducati Johns now and it sounds like ChrisW will be involved!

  7. Issue sorted by DJ and ChrisW! ECU hacked and immobiliser element eradicated. It seems the neutral light is a victim of this process and is gone.
