998 5.5/6" Rear Wheels

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Tommy B, Jun 11, 2015.

  1. What are people consensus on 5.5" or 6" wide rear wheels...my understanding is 180 tyre on a 5.5" and 190 on a 6"

What have people found better on the track? Obviously the 5.5" is slightly lighter, however is a 180 worse for a track oriented bike?

I have an option of some brand new Forged Marchesini's for £1100..puzzled over if to choose 5.5 or 6" rears.

Apologies if this had been discussed previously.

  2. not sure if this helps bud, but ive been using a 190 tyre on a 5.5 rim for years on my track bike never had a problem, but i did use a 180 on a my 748r which had a 5.5 rim also. i dont think it makes much difference tbh.

  3. 180 on a 5.5" is good enough. 190 may be suitable for a 6" but I know of no one that tends to use that combination in the 748-9** series of bikes.

  4. Cool, so no real benefit of a 6" rim then?

What profile tyres do the rs/fo1/fo2 bikes run?..190's

  5. They would be slicks so they would not be quite the same. I believe the tyres\wheels are also 16.5" so maybe no real correlation.

Also they would use a different hub size, larger (axle).

  6. Some later bikes ran 17's...I probably will be running slicks eventually so need a wheel to cover both angles.

  7. Get some nice 5 spoke OZ's :upyeah:

  8. That would be copying ;)

  9. Yeah, no one's using 10 spoke Marchi's :D

  10. erm.....
