600/750/900 Shared Engine Parts.

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Nasher, Jun 20, 2016.

  1. Good evening all.

I currently ride a 97 M900 and I’ve got to the point where I’m very pleased with it in terms of how it runs and what it looks like, I also thoroughly enjoy riding it.

To stop me playing with it anymore, and potentially taking it too far as I’ve done in the past with classic Z1000’s, I’ve decided to build up a 1990’s 900SS as a restoration/SL replica out of bits and pieces, and possibly a basket case 600/750/900SS if I can find one at the right price.
There will be no rush, as the idea is to keep me busy rather than putting something together to ride very soon.

I'm new to Ducati's, but have fallen in love very quickly after too many years with classic Z1000's, so please excuse my Newbie questions.

I’ve started, strangely, with the engine, in that I’ve picked up an incomplete but good condition 95(ish)M900 bottom end, some hardly used 900 barrels and pistons, plus a pair of 900SS heads. The Crankcases need splitting to check the insides out for anything that’s fallen in whilst it’s had no barrels on it, and I’ll replace all the bearings, seals and gaskets. I’m sad enough to enjoy the process so no problem there.

The vendor is a good guy and is going to look for the missing stuff like the oil pump, clutch assembly, flywheel, starter gears, belt covers, pulleys, tensioners etc, but I know I’ll end up buying some of these parts off ebay.

My big question is - what’s shared between the belt drive 600, 750 and 900 bottom ends?
Obviously the outer bits of the Clutch side are different because the 600/750 are wet clutch, but is the generator side the same? How about the oil pump etc?

Also how far into the later models did some parts carry over into?

Are any later model parts like an oil pump a good upgrade to the earlier engine? Bearing in mind I do have a lathe and milling machine.

I’m just looking to give myself a few more options when searching Ebay etc.

The various sites I’ve found online where you can view exploded diagrams and part numbers either start at year 2000 or don’t show the part numbers. Unless somebody knows a site that does show pre 2000 and the part numbers?

    Thanks

    Nasher.

  2. Not many parts are same between 600/750 and 900. Crankcases, stroke and bore different, gearbox different. Electrics vary over the years. The alternator changed from 2yellow to 3yellow wire around that time too.

  3. Also later 900 injected motor parts 98 on are different from carb.

  4. Thanks Guys.
I've been using the Stein-Dinse site, but stupidly only noticed tonight that the part numbers were there by clicking on the numbers on the drawing!!!

900Streetfighter, thanks for that, I'd have assumed more common parts between the sizes.

  5. Taking it too far with classic Z1's, what do you mean :Wideyed:

  6. Who the hell painted that KAWASAKI on the tank?

    Was it done in bitumen?

  7. The 650 and 750 share many parts as the engine is basically the same all round...........although some have wet clutches and some have have dry.

  8. It is old school - painted by hand by a pub sign writer :D

  9. Was he a five year old school pub sign writer?

Looks like the broad-brush approach to me.

  10. It was a broad brush, and he has done paintings for Valantino Rossi, Max Biaggi and many others and knows them personally :)

  11. Yeah and I knew Salvador Dali...........

  12. That's your studio :)

  13. I wonder what gave that away......

  14. The boobies :)

  15. But boobies won't fit a 900, 750 or 600 engine.

  16. I think it has already been determined prior to you going off topic and displaying porn, all good :)

  17. Depends on the year :grinning:

  18. Iirc, the 900 is closely related to the Desmoquattro engine, as in 851, 888, 916 etc but the 400, 600 and 750 have more in common with the Pantah engine.

  19. Thanks all.
So basically I'm not going to be able to use anything off one of the smaller engines.

If anyone has anything laying around they want to turn into beer money I'd be interested to hear what you have.

In basic terms I'm missing almost everything off both sides of the engine underneath both side covers and to do with the belt drive.
A blown up 900 engine that would yield all the parts would also be considered.

    Thanks

    Nasher.

  20. Oh
And I forgot to add an image of the Z1000 I kept for 29yrs as it gradually evolved. Other Bikes came and went but I always kept this one.
It broke my heart to have to sell it 2 years ago to pay some bills, but I managed to buy my M900 with what cash I had left over from the sale and am now completely obsessed with 90's Ducatis.
