748 748/916/996 Fairing Screen Screws - Help Please

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by West Cork Paul, Dec 5, 2018.

  1. Can someone tell me please what size and type the fasteners are that secure the screen to the nose fairing? I can't for the life of me find an allen or torx bit that fits and I don't want to force something that may not be correct tool.

    TIA.

  2. The torx bit is smaller than the standard sizes when buying a kit. I have an after market bit which I’ll dig out. Give me 10 minutes. Andy

  3. I’m using a Draper “TX-STAR” and it’s a T7. Andy

  4. when 'virgin'/never undone before, I remember getting away with a stock allen key but I can see someone has already had a go. It usually comes down to whether 5 star or 6 star, hopefully Andy will 'name' it.

  5. 5 star Andy

  6. Thanks a million guys. 'someone already had a go' was me on that particular one. They've never been undone before in 19 years, the rubber washers behind are perished and I want to replace them as part of it's winter refurb.

    So a 5 star T7 it is.

    Thank you both.

  7. Is there? Thanks, I will check that tomorrow. Thanks for the link as well. I bought replacement Dzeus from them earlier in the year so I’ll get new screen screws from them as well. :upyeah:

  8. I have confused things a little by adding the "5 star/6 star" bit Paul*. Because I sometimes refuse to get caught up in the design-rights squabble (remember the Phillips/Pozidriv furore?) I tend to go by the physical features first and only then maybe decide to source an "official" drive-bit if I can't find an unofficial drivebit that fits properly. There are so many types out there all striving for attention and hoping to be made std fitment on the most widely manufactured assemblies. I may be inciting controversy here but some of the patent applications and attempts to prosecute due to infringement are utterly ridiculous and i'm happy to give it all a wide berth after half a lifetime of it. Glad you are on the right track now!

some criticize Wiki for not being totally accurate but I think they are easy to find and far better than occasionally a choice of "nothing at all" :-

    * the majority are 6 star it seems, one of the 5 star types are designated "TS" apparently

  9. Hi, are they the same size that are used on the mid section that joins the belly pan?
