Hi - as a newbie to a 748, I’m hoping for a bit of tech advice please Firstly, runs and pulls very cleanly but blipping the throttle from tickover gives it a little cough before it picks up...a couple of blips and it will cut out but restart fine! Tickover is absolutely fine when throttle is left alone? Secondly, clutch occasionally makes a low pitch whine when pulling away in first, won’t do it every time but will do it after being stuck in traffic Third thing - it rattles like a cock in a bucket on a rough road, particularly under the front of the engine....I’m going to give to a specialist to go through absolutely everything on it but is there anything specific that’s prone to clanking about on one of these? Overall it actually rides really well, the engine sounds a bit clattery around 5000rpm ish but having read some other threads, pretty standard but worth having the valves checked? Any help, much appreciated....happy to throw a few quid at it but not if all the above is standard
Get Paul Goodall (used to work for Snells) based in Eastleigh to give it the once over. https://www.pgperformance.co.uk/
You need to hear a few Desmoquattro engines to get used to the sounds they make as they are quite rattly compared to most other engines, they also tend to be noisier IME than same era Duc aircooled twins. Though yours does sound like it needs a check over if there is a specific cylinder /area sounding more noisy than the other. Clutch whine might be the pressure plate bearing on the way out, an easy one to check for roughness and to swap if necessary.
Booked in with Paul on 14th May - he’s going to go through absolutely everything so thanks for the tip
He brought my 748 RS back to life after 14 years of doing nothing in someones garage. He is excellent at identifying those tiny, cheap things that cause major issues and being a perfectionist, he never gives up.
