  1. Looking for advice on my breakdown tonight, recovered the bike to find this, is it internal resistance in the connector, failed voltage regulator or failed alternator

  2. Most likely regulator or connector, or both.

  3. Could just be a knackered connector, not uncommon but otherwise my money's on the reg/rec.

  4. Same, I found a fully melted block when doing my servicing over the winter, most likely down to corrosion causing high resistance. Tidied it all up, re-terminated and all is well.

  5. Thanks for the replies, I’ve ordered a mofset regulator and new connectors to resolve this

  6. when you fit your new regulator, pay particular attention to that connector replacement, and check the alternator connectors at the same time. if any of these wires show signs of being "wriggly" or discoloured from overheating, then you might want to consider replacing those portions of wire also. I know this is impossible to do this in it's entirety where it leads into the alternator, but worth considering. The search engine on this forum is not the best, but there is an absolute wealth of information on here from various contributors over a period of more than 10 years on this very subject, and it*was the source of fires on the original models right at the beginning of production.

    * Melted connectors/melted insulation due to overheating as a result of poor conductivity

  7. My 916 connector melted many years ago, looked similar to this. I replaced the plug, the reg/rec was fine and it still works today.

Just make sure to keep the connections clean from corrosion.
